No campgrounds close to Chicago
We passed through Chicago this summer and wanted to spend the day sightseeing. After a ton of deliberation we realized the ONLY way to see the city was to camp out of the city and take the train in (left the Toad at home). We stayed at Indiana Dunes: absolutely gorgeous park on Lake Michigan for only $16/ night. The train is a half mile from the park, and one hour commute to city.
There is a KOA on the northwest side of city, but you have to drive 20 minutes to the nearest train station.
Don't try to drive into city in RV: many streets forbid trucks of any type, only cars.
