Is it safe to travel this area in October into November? Notice most campgrounds close mid Oct..will we have a problem finding some open..what about the roads?. Has anyone been there that late in season??

Sounds adventurous. Can't imagine anyone open. With overnight temps below zero I am sure most CG's have done their winterization before Nov. Plus it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to get 6 inches of snow on any given day.

We have been to Burlington in early October and stay at North Beach Campground, link

They are open until October 14th this year. The foliage peaks around the first week of October in the northern part of the state.

As noted, the majority of campgrounds in New England close around Columbus Day weekend, however you will find a few that stay later. It would be unusual for the roads to be a problem. I lived in VT for 45 years and have seen many snowless Thanksgivings. Also, I have no clue where the 6 below statement comes in - fall temps may drop below freezing at night, but warm up during the day. With that said, there are always exceptions. It has snowed in October and it has gotten very cold as well.

The most difficult thing you will have to deal with is the lack of campgrounds. The few that I found at that time of year catered to contract workers or fulltime residents and are not the nicest places to stay. While I had no difficulty driving in November I would not do it again because of the unpredictable presence of black ice on bridges. You can do things to prevent your plumbing from freezing but after October 15 there is little to do in New England anyway so I would head south if I was you.

did the trip oct.09 great leaves but beware after 15 of oct not much camps open

There are a number of campgrounds open year round in NH and in the states mentioned that you would like to visit. Do a search well before your trip and you'll do fine. Danforth Bay Camping Resort in Freedom, NH is open year round and was voted #1 campground in NH. As far as weather, it's doubtful you'll experience any problems. I often camp in the Fall every year.
