Maine / Nova Scotia Trip Planning?

I am in the initial planning stages of a trip to Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia for the summer of 2015. I have searched the forums and am investigating sights and campground recommendations found in the search. Since we are not familiar with the areas and don't know what will catch our interest, we would like to do the trip without advanced campground reservations. Is that feasible during the summer? We have a 40 ft. motorhome. We'll have about 8 weeks to do the round-trip from NJ. We just purchased our rig (first RV ever) this past April, so we are still newbies to the whole trip planning process.

This summer we are doing upstate NY and found that we needed reservations to get sites in the state parks and campgrounds. That eliminates our freedom for further exploration if we find an area that we would like to spend more time in. Hopefully Maine, NB, NS are less crowded than NY?

In 2012 we traveled from Phoenix through Minnesota then through the Michigan upper peninsula into Canada. Our destination was the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia prior to dropping down into Maine to do some leaf peeping throughout New England.

We had no reservations except for the remote place we stayed at the Bay of Fundy and didn't really have any trouble finding CGs. We have a 40DP as well and very rarely do state/national parks due to our size.

Best of luck.

Mricet, we too are nubies, and have just finished a section of our summer Harper's Ferry to Booth Bay to Bellingham, MA. We found that reservations are a must, especially through the mid-June/4th of July and onward. There just aren't that many large RV spaces. We also found that 50 amp connection aren't always easy to come by either. I suggest that you get a 30/50 amp adapter and use it once or twice just for practice. Many of the places we stayed at or visited didn't have pull through sites, and large trees or rocks limited access to what would otherwise be acceptable spaces. You might ask about the best routes to get from NJ to Maine, our reading of the map function of the Good Sam site showed size restrictions, or RV restrictions on I-95 & most roads through NYC.

I am in the middle of the trip you want to take, we are in Halifax area, this is the first day we have had internet for the past 10 days. Be sure and go to to Island of Britain, north Nova Scotia. We stayed in both national parks, Broad and Cheticamp, both were full on the weekends but through the week they were almost almost empty, the locals fill the parks up on the weekend but there was still space for our 43'. When you go north can Hwy 19 but go up the west side to Chitacamp, do not go the east side to Ingonish. The road is so much better and you can drive to the east side, from Ingonish to Cheticamp is about 100KM, the west side to us was the better side as for scenery plus the roads was so much better. When you leave be sure and come back the way you went up, 19 down the west side, about 30-40 miles of the east road is really really bad, the rest is not that good north of St. Anna Harbor,. we went through Maine and stayed in Eastport, we did Bar Harbor several years back, we were there July 4th. and enjoyed all the celebrations. If you have not been to Bar Harbor it is OK, really touristy (if that is a word) we also spent some time in New Brunswick, there also the campgrounds were not full, plenty of space on the waterfront. I think the fuel has everybody scared off. Diesel in most places is $1.32 to 1.41/liter, that is $5.25 to 5.35 per gallon, they consider the Canadian dollar and the American dollar the same value, thanks Washington DC. We have enjoyed our trip, we will be in the Halifax area for the rest of this week then back home, but it has been a beautiful trip and we think worth the price. The Highlands are great, food is expensive but for the most part good.

I think you should be OK not making advance reservations EXCEPT where there is more demand for RV spaces,ie; heavy tourism areas along the Atlantic coast, some parts of the northeast corridor - Mass., Conn, NH and possibly parts of Maine. We are presently at the Pumpkin Patch RV Resort in Maine (this is a traditional "jumping off" point for travel into Canada and the Maritimes. This resort can get full at times, so reservations are recommended. Not so much for other RV parks in the area. Good luck and enjoy the planning - half the fun, IMHO.

A lot of your CG availability depends on where in Maine you go. If you are in an area with a lot of CGs you won't have a problem. Other areas may only have one CG and they could be booked up. If you're flexible you shouldn't have a problem

Coastal Maine in high tourist season may present some problems (and traffic) for your camping plans....but....Walmart will allow you to overnight if all the campgrounds are full!....Best of luck!
