Next year DW and I are going to Michigan upper peninsula for a vacation. We want to take the painted rock tour.
Are there any nice (large space, quite) state parks near there?

We stayed at the Jack Pine Lodge on Hwy 94 about halfway between Manistique and Munising. It's not a state park, but it's in the national forest and definitely quiet. You can get satellite if you are in a site with clear sky access, but there are a lot of trees and limited cell service. They also have a decent restaurant on site. It's only about a 25 minute drive to Munising where you catch the boat for the Pictured Rocks tour. Also, about 90 miles to the north east is Tahquamenon Falls, which is a good side trip.

We were stationed by Marquette MI and averaged 100" snow each season. I doubt many parks are open during the snow season (Halloween-Easter).

While there take time to visit the Keewenaw Peninsula and Copper Harbor.

Muskellonge Lake State Park. It's at the end of the paved road, on a beautiful lake and the shore of Lake Superior is a walk across the street. The DW and I stayed there in our pop-up a couple of years ago but there were large motorcoaches and trailers.
Have fun driving over the Mackinac Bridge in a motorcoach!

Houghton, Mi is a great place to visit. Home of Michigan Teck.
The city rv park is right on the canal with great full service sites. Lots of good places to shop and eat.
Travel to Hancock just across the canal to see a real deep shaft copper mine.
Then travel up the Keewanaw to Copper Harbour and on the way see the museum at Calumet.
Really worth the time to visit.

I'll second the Munising Tourist Park, some of the sites are right on the Lake Superior shore and are plenty big for large rigs. But make a reservation well in advance or you may get into the park but not get a lakeside site. And this park is very close to the boat service that takes you out on the lake for the tour. Wear pants and bring a sweater for the boat ride because Lake Superior never really gets warm and the air can be cool even in the heat of summer.

yup, we stayed there also and it's quiet and close to the PR tour. we avoided the MI state parks due to their entrance fees policy of charging for both the MH and our toad.

Bay Furnace campground, Hiawatha Nat'l Forest is the place to stay. Lovely quiet sites right on the lake and good for big rigs. Take your boat cruise late afternoon for the best color and photos. I'd also highly recommend a stay at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park at Copper Harbor. It's very unique and pleasant even though Michigan's state parks are getting pricey. Even them out by the many gorgeous national forest campgrounds in the area with big sites. To start, as soon as you cross that 'Mighty' bridge and head west on Hwy 2 to Brevort national forest campground. It's a good base for visiting Mackinac Island. If you get to the far west side of the Upper Peninsula there are many waterfalls to enjoy and most are very easy to get to. Stop at a local visitor center or Chamber of Commerce and they will have the waterfall map and directions for you to explore. Enjoy!

Oh.... and if your timing is flexible, August is a good time to be in the Upper Peninsula - a lot less visitors and much less mosquitoes. Avoid May/June if you can - the new hatches are hungry!

Munising Tourist Park has been found out. I tried getting waterfront reservations the day after they opened up but all were already taken almost a year out.

If you can live without electric and water hook ups head south a little ways on NF-13. Petes lake campground has nice sites. If you pass the forest glenn genral store you went to far. Wide waters campground is right there also but the sites at petes lake are better ( am assuming spring-fall camping, i know they are closed for winter) they are maybe 20=30 min from munising.

We found the picture rocks best viewed by hiking the trails along the lakeshore. we really liked the big loop that goes out past chapel falls. We also just enjoyed icking a random trail and hike it then go have lunch in gran marias after walking enough to build a large appetite.

Take more bug juice than you think you will need, head nets, buffs to cover the face and ears.............my wife even got to wearing saftey googles to keep the bugs from making us fully insane. never been anywhere except the deep jungles of panama that had flying bugs so thick.
