Michigan UP ????

We're planning a trip in July and August to MI UP. Planning to return to FL via WI. I've been trying to research some less expensive CG's which seem to mostly be State Parks and without electric, etc. That's not a problem but it is a big question as to whether we can access and find space in the park for our rig (see sig line). Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

Our "style" is to set up for s few days and then take the toad to explore the area. Some areas we are planning on visiting are:
Traverse City
Petosky
Sault Ste. Marie
Escanaba

Any other suggestions would also be welcome.

I saw that thread and looked at it and got some good info too. But, my question of will our 40' fit in the State Park CG's is still unanswered.

Each state park is different so for an accurate answer you might want to look at this reservation site. As a test, I plugged in "Traverse City State Park" and entered under "Equipment", a 45' motorhome and it will then give you what is available for your date. I noticed there is also a choice for a 50' motorhome which would be plenty of room for your towed. You will definitely need reservations so you might want to start making them. Good luck!

We too would like to hear more about the UP. We have only been in the southern part of the state and stayed at 1 SP, Sterling SP. They charged $6 a day for our toad and $6 one time to bring the Bounder in (has an engine, so you gotta pay???). Needless to say our first impression of MI was not the best. But are thinking about the UP this summer. So keep the ideas and info coming. Thanks,

Bob

Send a message via AIM to stearn
We have stayed at a city park in East Jordan Mi.The park is on Charlevoix lake, and is close to Charlevoix. That puts you at about a fifty mile radius to Traverse City, and about sixty to the Mackinaw bridge. We also stayed in Munising city park. It is also on the water, and close to pictured rocks. The parks mentioned will handle your rig easily. I think you will find the price better then that of the State parks.

A few years back a member was posting about all the extra charges MI. State Parks charged each day to come and go while staying in the campground. I think her point was they charged for each motorized unit even if your motorhome stayed put on your site and you used your toad to go in and out. All this was on top of the regular overnight camping fee....I thought I heard something has changed on that policy last year....any updates...do they charge differently for out of state residents?

I'm planning a trip to the UP next year...

We stayed at a couple of MI state parks and enjoyed them, but in both cases the fee's added up to more than many rv parks. We are in MI every year to see family, but rarely stay in the state parks anymore. Us outlanders get to pay more than the residents.

Downtown Ashland(MI) city park by the old coal loading train dock.
Park Falls(WI) city campground by the Boy Scout Headquarters building almost downtown--quiet, by the river, site 5 has sewer hookup, otherwise free dump at city garage, all sites have water & electric.
Boulder Lake (WI) has two loops with electric hookup. Front loop has about 10 sites, back loop has about 30 sites. Best check for reservations during busy season. Newer bath houses with nice showers. Dump station, nice lake, swimming beach, hiking trails. $12/day with Golden Age card.

Thanks to all for the good info. Please keep it coming. WE especially like city or county parks if they can handle a 40' rig. Thanks

I was searching for a city named Boulder Lake, WI and there's not one on the two map programs I have. But there is a Boulder Junction, WI that is on the shores of Boulder Lake, WI. I'm going to assume that's what Nitehawk was talking about.

Here is a suggested route:
· Traverse City & Sleeping Bear Dunes -Indigo Bluffs RV park
· Petoskey – City Park, faces Little Traverse Bay
· Mackinaw City - Mackinaw Mill Creek park – Get a spot facing Lake Huron
· Sault Ste Marie – Soo Locks CG- Get a spot facing St Mary’s River
· Copper Harbor - ? CG
· Door County WI – Take your pick of CG’s
· Manitowoc WI – Put MH on ferry SS Badger to Ludington MI (About 4 hr)
· Head back South

Did this tour last year, but in reverse.
