Michigan UP Pictured Rocks rustic camping

Hi,

I will be taking my first long trip in our rig in early August.

We are booked for Tahquamenon falls state park for 4 nights at the end of the trip to meet friends, we plan to head up to the UP 4 or 5 days beforehand (driving from Saginaw valley).

We plan to spend 2 nights around Marquette and 2 at pictured rocks, at Marquette we will go to a commercial site but Pictures rocks I will like to use one of the rustic campsites.

Has anyone used any of these rustic sites? In August would be too hot at night to be without power for air con?

Coach is 35" with no toad.

Thanks,

Better choice at PRocks is Munising City Park just west of town right on the lake. Do take the boat ride... only way to see the cliff faces.

Thanks, we are definitely up for the boat ride.

We wanted to do some hiking so was looking to stay in the park itself.

My wife and I stayed along Lake Superior in July. Temps dropped into the low 40s that night.

It might be hot during the day, but it always cools off at night.

This is the very best campground to stay in Munising at Pictured Rocks. It's Bay Furnace Hiawatha National Forest campground - very suitable for big rigs. Also, the best lighting for the boat tour is toward evening. You won't see the colors if you go earlier.

Unfortunately, I think 35 feet is too long for many - if not all - of the PRNLS campsites along H-58 between Munising and Grand Marais.

The Bay Furnace National Forest site just West of Munising is wonderful, as is Woodland Park in Grand Marais, on the East side of the PRNLS.

Thanks all, I am sure I read that there are sites that will fit.

I will call the Rangers.

Shoot! My memory failed me!

Your correct - 36 feet is the cutoff for all three of the H-58 rustic campgrounds.

So you're good!

We live just down the road from the PRNLS and love living here. We have our motorhome so we can escape in late Winter/early Spring when the cabin fever sets in, but Summer in the UP is spectacular!

If you have any questions or need a list of local, off the beaten path places to visit, please feel free to PM me and let me know what types of things you're interested in (hiking, food, fishing, breweries, etc.).

Also, please send some Spring our way from Saginaw. Yesterday we had a high of 38 and, so far, we don't have a single leaf on any of the trees around Marquette... ;-)

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

The weather down here has been a bit odd, I even had to have the air conditioning running two weeks ago. Now it's freezing again.

I would like to do a seperate trip to Copper harbour and the Porcupines, would September or October still be ok?

It's OK of its cold overnight but just don't want to drive the coach on snow or ice.

H-58 is mentioned. Is that where you want to go at Grand Marais?

Most folks visit Pictured Rocks from the west side at Munising on Hwy 28. That's where the boat tour originates. That is also where the above-mentioned Bay Furnace campground is located. It's a great place to stay.

We would like to hike as much as possible, it will obviously mean doubling back on ourselves but that's OK :-)

I have been to Munising in the past but but Grand Marais.
