Wish I knew the exact path the Mickelson takes, but it disappears several times and then will show up again as it meanders in and out of the hills and valleys.
There is a lot to see and do around Deadwood, but most of the 'do's' involve money and the odds are always against you in any casino and on the slots.
It is interesting in Hill City to ride the railroad over to Keystone through the country. Slow, but interesting. You do have a walk a bit but if you ride bikes that should not be a problem. There is an actual gold mine in Keystone that you can tour, but claustophobia prevented me from going into a tunnel .

Just remember there is so much more to the Black Hills than the MT. Check out Mt Coolidge inside the Park and you can see Crazy Horse as well as Rushmore from there. Burros and buffalo both can cause traffic jams on the Game Loop road. BigHorn Sheep are likely to stop traffic on the highway that near GameLodge, especially in the early spring.
If you get east of the Hills, check out Buffalo Gap (town with no paved streets)
Lots of more, there, try to see as much as you can

We are starting to lean more towards Custer's Gulch, instead of Rafter-J. Since we aren't bringing any kids, and are mostly looking for peace and quiet, Custers may be more to our liking. They are both on the Mickleson Bike trail, which is a must. Also, Custers is considerable cheaper.

Anyone experience them both?

In case your dates change... Remember that the Sturgis Bike Rally are the weeks both sides of bike week which is Aug 6-12, 2012. The week following it is all clear and no reservations needed at all. The (couple) weeks before are build up weeks and can get pretty hectic throughout that entire extended Black Hills area. FYI... Personally, I do bike week and I don't even ride!

I will second Custer's Gulch!!!!!! Location being the key with it. It doesn't have the pools/spas and all but that is to my liking anyway. Too much else to do with Mother Nature nearby.

Our dates are set- June 24- July 15th. We would like to spend half the time in one campground, then move to another. Right now we are thinking to start at Custer's Gulch, then move to Chris' Camp near Spearfish.
