Try contacting the Sourdough CG in Tok AK. Real good folks and the wife is an Alaska native so they should be able to help you out. Good luck on your quest. We would love to return someday, as soon as we have been everywhere else.

I think you might mean the "Northern Lights". The best time to see them is obviously when the sun is NOT out. When we lived in Alaska, we saw them several times. Mostly after midnight and in January and February. They can be awesome. I saw them after a Jimmy Buffet concert in Anchorage in 1987 and they were in multi-colors and lasted for over 2 hours. Very rare!!

If you get back to Alaska go to Eagle Summit on the Steese Highway. Midnight sun can be seen from there between June 17 and 24. Went there in 1980 when stationed in Alaska. Unfortunately it was cloudy and raining.

I'm not certain if this is a composite photo but it is interesting.

I received this in an email today.

-Tom

This is the sunset at the North Pole with the moon at its closest point last week.

A scene you will probably never get to see in person, so take a moment and enjoy God at work at the North Pole.

And, you also see the sun below the moon.

My astronomy club members have told me this photo is a hoax.

-Tom

"This is an old hoax.* Remember that the apparent size of the sun and the moon are the same. Even at the north pole. And a week ago, the moon was more than half full."

"And a week ago...in winter...the North Pole was bathed in total darkness.* And, hopefully, not liquid.* Although when I flew over the pole heading to Shanghai from Toronto last September, the polar cap had great cracks in it."
