Molas Lake

Planning a trip to Molas Lake in June. We are new RVers and are concerned about the road from Durango on to the park. Is this a good road for new RVers to drive with a ford f350 dually and a 31' fifth wheel? I have been unable to get any real info about the road online. I KNOW the road on to Oray is a no go... that million dollar hwy is scary in just a car to me! Any insight out there?

I have pulled a 35 5th wheel from Durango, Ouray, Telluride and back to Durango with a ford 460 gas. Great highway but it is slow and a hell of a pull - no issues, there a a lot of pull off area to let cars pass just a long pull.

Also, did the trip in opposite direction in a 29 foot motor home e pulling a Honda.

In August we are doing to Delores to Durango trip. 4 nights in Clayton cg between Delores and Telluride, 2 nights at a resort in Telluride (45th anniversary), 2 nights at Molis lake ( on top of the world and great fighting) and then 2 nights at Durango United Campground. Then back to Tucson - 2 full weeks.

We lived in the 4 corners area years ago and have do this loop many many times! Clockwise and counter clockwise...

This time we have a 27' 5th wheel with a Ford diesel.

From Durango to Molas Lake is Hwy 550. It will be a climb to Molas with some turns. It's a good 2-lane highway and many RVers drive it. We've driven the whole route of 550 to Ouray - yes, it's a biggie but we don't mind mountain driving.

550 to Molas is gentle compared to the part beyond from Silverton to Ouray. I guess it all depends on how you feel about your truck's capability on a steep uphill (and you'll have to return downhill, too), and also on your feelings driving a mountain road. Like I said, the worst part of 550 is beyond Molas and Silverton. It's between Silverton and Ouray.

Molas is a beautiful lake. I don't know if you're aware that they've recently redid the campground and the prices went up. Check out their website.

If you plan to drive in the mountains much you might think of purchasing the 'Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers'. We use it all the time. It will give you mile by mile on many of the roads. It comes in Western and Eastern editions.
