We very much like the Rafter J Bar, and it's central location to all the attractions.

Spearfish is nice, but a LONG way from most of the attractions.

Hart Ranch is one of the nicest places we have ever stayed.

We Stayed in the KOA at Mount Rushmore ( Custer / Mount Rushmore KOA | Camping in South Dakota | KOA Campgrounds ). We found it convienint to Crazy Horse, Dead Wood, and Sturgis. These were our goals as we traveled through the area. We would stay there again. There are many other attractions several hours driving distance in the area that can be explored: Bad Lands, Devils Tower, Wall drugs...etc. Travel safe...The joy is in the ride.

Custer state park is beautiful, but for visiting the other area attractions it takes too long to get in and out of the park. We've never stayed at Hart ranch, a great location for visiting Rapid City, but too far out, in our opinion, for visiting the main attractions in the hills.

We spent 2 weeks at this campground, Broken Arrow Horse and RV Camp, and really enjoyed it. Convenient to all the sights. It is at the end of a paved road with lots of wild life to watch. Plus, the owners are great!

I forget the CG name, it is in Keystone; you can see Mt. Rushmore from the CG.

We will be staying at Rushmore Shadows in July for a couple days. Close to Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse.

Pick a campground and make reservations, fills up quick.

Don't know if has changed, but when I was there several years back the big deal at Rushmore was on July 3rd. In the town of Custer, close by, I saw the grearest fireworks display ever. The local volunteer fire dept. had fund raisers all year and collected a donation at the gate to help defray the expense and it was worth every dollar. My G'Kids who were with us still speak about how neat it was.

We stayed at the KOA & found it to be better than any KOA that we have stayed at.
