Bishgeo,
We stayed at Rafter J RV Park which is a very nice park and centrally located to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. We stayed there 5 nights and found it to be a good experience.

Bishgeo, we stayed at Holy Smoke CG. It is on 16 very close to Rushmore. it is small and very nice, full hook ups. The owner also has a very good (not expensive) resturant at the top of the hill, This is also the office. It was a great, quiet retreat from exploring. Most of the sites were pull thus.

Hello bishgeo;
We also stayed at the Rafter J RV Park. I had heard they are rated number 1 in the area. And I believe they are number 1. Had a great time. Sites are huge mostly gravel, full hook ups, but in great shape. They also have horse back riding at the park. We actually had the pleasure of watching the horses running to the riding stables early in the morning about 100 feet from our site.
Book Rafter J. You won't be dissapointed.

I am not sure what time of year you are considering going, but I just looked in TL and bot Rafter J and Holy Smoke Resort are open May 15-Oct 1. We worked this last summer at happy Holiday, about 6 miles outside of Rapid City onn Hwy. 16. It has sites open year round, and would accommodate you. Its a very good park. If you can find one open in Keystone or Hill City you are more centrally located, but we found our park was just fine for getting around.

The one negative thing about Happy Holiday is that it is a little bit cramped. The sights are not very large. It's clean and reasonably priced but you need to like your neighbors if you stay there.

We stayed at Big Pines Campground and were very pleased with it. A very nice young couple has owned it for about a year and they are very hostible and accomodating. The web site is here.

We stayed at The Heart Ranch just out from Rapid City and thought it was one of the best campgrounds we have been to. The over flow sites have water, Electric and cable and the full hook up sites are beautiful. Plan to stay at least a week in the area because there is so much to see. Have a great trip!!

We prefer to stay in Custer and drive around the area. Our favorite campground in Custer is Heritage Village, with a view of Crazy Horse Monument.

We stayed at SPOKANE CREEK CABINS & CAMPGROUND, 24631 Iron Mtn. Rd. (Hwy.16A) Keystone, SD 57751, (605) 666-4609 just south of Keystone, a nice quite RV park off the main road, but an easy drive to the Monument and other attractions and sightseeing.

Please check the height and length restrictions prior to proceeding south from Keystone on 16A, most large RV's will not fit through the tunnels and switchbacks.
