we stayed at happy holiday rv park a couple of yrs ago. found that most lots were facing each and shared a common shelter and cement patio. started making reservations for this summer's trip in first half of jan. after two weeks of trying to call happy holiday and getting same " mailbox full " message ,gave up and made reservation at rapid city rv park and campground ( formerly lazy j rv park ) . new owners were very helpful. reserved us one large pull through and plus a room for four. will see how it works out. too bad happy holiday rv did not have an answering service , as they also have a motel attached, and we enjoyed our stay. four adults and four kids in a 36 meridian ,not tooooo bad during the day, I can always stop and unhook tow and kick half off them out, but at night they have to sleep somewhere else!

We stayed several days at the Elks Lodge in Rapid City. Its located near the highway and has a golf course. Very pretty location. The lodge lets you use the restrooms and showers if needed in the basement of the golf pro shop.
You must be an Elks member but if you are an Elk it is a nice reasonable CG.

Gonna be crowded anywhere in the Hills that first week. They start getting there a few days before and many leave a couple of days early. That said,GO! This will be a milestone for bikers and people who live in the Hills

We are putting together our 2016 travel plans, and found this timely post. Of course, our preliminary schedule puts us at Devils tower Aug. 4-7, and Mt Rushmore Aug. 7-10.

How much impact is the bike rally on the surrounding areas? Is is just the day cruisers from Sturgis going to see the sights (and if so, does it make it feel too crowded?) or do some of the bikers stay outside Sturgis and fill up the campgrounds?

Just concerned with crowds and noise........

Thanks!

If you are not a biker, don't go anywhere near Sturgis during the bike rally. The crowds are so huge that all campgrounds within 30-50 miles are filled, the roads are filled, the restaurants are filled... You get the picture. It is worth replanning the vacation.

We went the week before the rally once, and the last 3 days of our trip was already getting crowded. Another time we went through the area the week of the rally, and it was very crowded even on the interstate. Everywhere we looked in Rapid City there were bikers.

Note this is not a slam against the bikers themselves, just the crowds. The crowds will be huge.

As far as day cruisers, you will see them from morning until well after sunset. Spearfish Canyon, Game Loop (CSP), Badlands, just about anywhere in the Hills there will be bikes. There will be less animals along the game loop because of the constant growl of the big twins. The tend to drift further away from the road. They can be seen on many of the park roads that are dirt and sparsely traveled.
Since this a major milestone anniversary date for the rally, they are looking for a record numbers of bikers to show up.
No way would I attempt to get to Devils Tower with anything of size. A MC is about the only thing I personally would want even attempt the ride up to the mountain with. Same with Rushmore and Crazy Horse only the access with these is better

We stayed in town just below Rushmore. There are a few campsites that the hotel rents out. Close to everything and it was reasonable.Click image for larger version

We are currently staying at Camp Welikit in Custer. They are very nice people and you are only a mile from the town of Custer. You will still feel in the woods with wide spots and trees.

Custer is close to Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse, Needle Hyway and the Wildlife Loop. It is all awesome. If you are not a biker don't come to this area during the Bike Rally early August.

Thanks for the post on welikit. I'm staying there for 3 days at the end of August then heading to Yellowstone. Glad you gave it good feedback. A friend recommended it to me.

Has anyone stayed at Elk Creek Resort near Piedmont? We're headed there in mid June.
