Mt. Rushmore CGs

I've read the threads on the subject, but would appreciate additional recommendations. Will be there last week of August. First question, does that time period require reservations, or is there plenty of RV park vacancies? Reduced list of candidates include: Rapid City KOA, Mt. Rushmore KOA, Rafter J Bar, Crocked Creek, Happy Holiday Resort, Lake Park CG, Custer/Blue Bell, Custer/Grace Coolidge, Heartland RV, Three Flags RV, Broken Arrow, Hill City KOA. Will spend 3 or 4 nights, full hook-ups or dry camping, doesn't matter.

There are a number of nice campgrounds on your list, but we always stay at the Rafter J Bar. It is a very nice campground plus it's perfectly located, in our opinion.

Any campground inside Custer State Park will put you a long way, time wise, from many of the "attractions" outside the park. Head straight out of the Rafter J Bar, up and over the hill and you're at Mt. Rushmore. Turn left out of the park and you're just minutes from Hill City. Turn right and you're headed to the Crazy Horse monument and the city of Custer. No issues with access with a large rig/toad. You can pick the type of site you want - wide open, in the trees, or something in between (the sites, with the exception of the one area immediately next to the office, are spread over a very large property).

If you're going before schools are back in session I'd recommend a reservation.

And yes, you do want to set at least a day aside for touring Custer State Park.

We stayed at Hill City KOA last Fall. Nice park. It may not be as close as some of the others but it worked well for us.

We stayed at the Happy Holiday a couple of years ago, and cruised the area for a few days in the toad. Nice park, convenient to sights but also to Rapid City.

Stayed at rapid city koa for overnight. Pretty crowded in mid august, but no problems. Stayed at Fort welikit in Custer for 3 nights. Nice central location to see the sites. Great restrooms. Stayed at deadwood koa too. Shuttle into town is a big plus. Don't miss the purple pie shop in Custer

We stayed at the Mount Rushmore KOA. Beautiful campground. One thing though, avoid the area when the Sturgis motorcycle rally takes place. The whole Mount Rushmore area is jamb-packed with bikers and reservations are a must!

Thats the most fun time but I'm one of the bikers. Seriously- nice campground and you will not get a reservation during the rally anyway if you don't reserve a year ahead of time.

Thanks to the irv2 team, knew we could depend on you for valuable information and recommendations. We've narrowed that long list down to a couple and will make a reservation since it is going to be still in the summer Rush...more.

We've been to the area twice and last stayed at Rafter J Bar and loved it - lots of space. We drove thru the Mt Rushmore KOA and sites were very close. If I'm ever in the area again I will only stay at Rafter J - conveniently located. When in the area, be sure to go see Brule if they are still in the area.

Once "Bike Week" is over, summer if over. You can have your pick of campgrounds.

I liked the Rafter J Bar of all the campgrounds that we stayed at over the years. The place has lots of open spaces and the individual sites are big. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally or "bike week". It is supposed to be bigger and more crowded than usual. My son, who has lived in Rapid City for a long time, drives a delivery truck for one of the beer companies in Rapid and told me that they expect a huge turnout. The event is from August 3-9 but I would not go in the area any time near the actual time of the rally.

I'm headed up to Custer last week of August also for a few days then on to yellowstone. I'm staying at ft. Welikit CG in Custer as recommended by a friend. I've never been there so hope it's not a dump.
