MT, WY & CO in Sep & Oct

We are starting to flesh out the later part of our travels for the coming Sep & Oct. Looking to leaving Rapids City, SD area around Sep 2nd, west to Yellow Stone for a week or so, then south towards DEN, ABQ and then the DFW area by Nov 15th.

Does that sound a tad too late for weather? Also, is there a time when many of the campgrounds start shutting down in those areas?

Some campgrounds around YNP close near the end of Sept, but lots of places to stay still, just not in Yellowstone, those CG will be closed. We were there last Sept., had a few days of snow that temporarily closed park roads for a few hours but we still were able to move about. Campgrounds get strict about not leaving water hoses connected, so you have to fill and stow the hose, they don't want their hydrants freezing.

You will see fall colors in Colorado mid September to early October, north to south, as you drive through. Snow is anybody's guess, tho. \ken

And don't forget the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta the first full week of October. They have a large gravel pad for a couple hundred RVs right across from the Visitors Center. Reservations required. \ken

Here's a link to Yellowstone's campgrounds and closing dates:

Campgrounds - Yellowstone National Park (U.S. National Park Service)

We'll be at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival and will be crewing. Looking forward to it!

Don, Talk to Jim and I at the GC@CL or when we meet at Cooper Lake. That is the trip we took last summer.

See you soon.

Don,

We'll be at grizzly in West Yellowstone labor Day week, and in Coulter Bay RV Resort the following two weeks...a little pricey, but the latter looks like a beautiful place to spend a few early Fall weeks.

Dave...

Cool!

Did you make reservations already or holding off on that until you know your plans are holding up?

Reservations three months ago. We're still on the schedule that I put together in Jan. Highlight is mid-Summer in Canmore Alberta.

Maybe you get lucky if you're headed that way with reservations...we hear the Coulter Bay RV Resort is one of the nicest places to park in the country. Tetons is Beth's #1 on the bucket list. We'll also do Southern Yellowstone from there.

We spent 5 days there two years ago. It is definitely not an RV resort, and I wouldn't consider it one of the nicest places to park. It is a good base for seeing the Tetons, but it is an over priced forest service campground with full hookups. Even with the Senior Pass it was $49 plus tax for very tight and unlevel sites. Our next door neighbor had his jacks fully extended with his front wheels several inches off the ground and still could not get level. We were at the end of a row, and cars sped by constantly (speed limits meant nothing). We reported it twice, but it was too comfortable for them to leave the office. Fortunately we were sightseeing much of the day, and only had to contend with it in late afternoon and evening.

That said, the park is fabulous. Hopefully there will be no fires when you visit. When it is clear it can't be beat. In addition to the mountains and lakes, the wildlife is great. We drove the length of the park each day, and experienced something different each day. One day it was a large herd of Bison crossing the road, another it was deer feeding along the roadside, and another it was eagles overhead. Almost every day we were privileged to see a couple of bull moose feeding along the river in the area appropriately named Moose. We missed it, but one day a bear was seen swimming in the marina area.
