Heading there in May, first time. We know to see Charleston, and probably Biltmore and Hilton Head. We love history...anything we really need to put on our itinerary? Also, we'll be coming in via Florida, and Savannah GA. Would also like any recommendations for Georgia coast, and even RV parks. Thanks!

If you're into history then both Savannah and Charleston are wonderful. You could stay at the Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort & take the back road to Charleston. Also a county park just southeast of Savannah. There is an armed hydrogen bomb lost in the silt off just off the coast of Savannah.

James Island County Park is a great place to stay close to Charleston.

Downtown Wilmington NC has a lot of history & tours of some of the houses. The Battleship USS North Carolina is across the river from downtown Wilmington.

There is a lot of Nascar shops you can tour & the speedway in Concord, NC just north of Charlotte. Campgrounds at the speedway. There are a few battlefields southwest of Charlotte along I-85 at the NC /SC border. A nice campground in Blacksburg, SC. & also in Gaffney, SC is a KOA.

NC outerbanks are very scenic with thier small seaside villages & lighthouses with ferrys to Okracoke Island, may need reservations with an rv.

Aheville, Maggies Valley, Blowing Rock and Blue Ridge all in western part of NC are "must sees" in my opinion.

Just outside of Charleston is Charles Towne Landing, the birthplace of SC. It is awesome for history buffs. Large exhibit hall. There is a lot of walking involved and but so much to see. A lot of the originalsettlement has been preserved or recreated, and people in period costumes to demonstrate how things were in those days. Kids seem to love the place. Even let our Beagle walk on the trails.

As dsbike posted, several battlefields along near the state line. Kings Mountain Military Park abuts the state line in SC, along with the Kings Mountain SP in NC. Also, the Cowpens National Battlefield near Gaffney. Most people think of the Civil War when they're in the south, but these are Revolutionary War memorials. A great deal of the Revolution was fought in the south, particularly after about 1778. I guess both sides tired of the winters. Some things are constant.

If you are a wwII buff, then visit Patriots Point in Charleston. There are also several civil war forts around. Travel up 17 towards Murrels inlet and visit Brookgreen gardens and while you're at it, stay at Huntington Beach state park which is just across the street. Go eat some local seafood in Murrells Inlet.

Although I love the coast, I must plug the Upstate SC, especially Caeser's Head and Table Rock mountains. Beautiful views, and hiking with different levels of difficulty. Also downtown Greenville at Falls Park is very special as it's one of the only cities with a waterfall. West of there are some beautiful lakes near Clemson and Anderson SC.

Tons to see and do around Western NC and Asheville, but I'll let someone else talk to that.

St.Mary's Ga lets rv's park in town for 2 days. Cumberland Island National Seashore is there, great places to eat, lovely homes and a cemetery (if you like them) to tour. People are always nice. Follow signs for Historic St Marys

As has been mentioned - a lot of history in the area. We just recently left the area - we stayed at the Savannah Oaks RV Park outside of Savannah and found out that Savannah turns St. Patrick's day into a week-long party! The River Front area was awash with people wearing green and having a great time! We did the Hearse Tour which was entertaining.

Going north if you're into military history you MUST stop in Fayetteville, NC for the Airborne and Special Forces Museum and then go into Ft Bragg and stop at the 82ND Airborne Museum. Both of these are excellent museums that show the history of our elite fighting forces, and both are free (except for the gift shops!) - if you don't have military ID you need to stop at the Visitor Center entering Ft Bragg and get a visitor pass, but that's a painless and quick stop.

I would suggest OBX, Asheville, Blue Ridge Parkway, Nantahala Gorge.

Beware the last half or May is race weeks in Charlotte so if you are planning on the speedway area be sure to have reservations.

I must boost a great place: the Aurora Fossil Museum.
Dig up your own fossils and shark teeth for free. They even provide the tools! You will find many in little time.
A great time for young and old.

Gee. How long a trip do you plan? NC is over 400 miles from West to East. I don't think anyone has mentioned the Outer Banks at the Eastern end. There are weeks worth of stuff at the Western end.

The Revolutionary War battlefields at King's Mountain, Cowpens, The Waxhaws and Musgrove's Mill are all nice historical sites. You can spend an hour or so at each, have a nice invigorating walk, and get a pretty good idea of what happened, since the scale was so much smaller than the Civil War sites like Gettysburg and Vicksburg.
