N. Rim Grand Canyon/Zion/Bryce: Kanab, UT ??

We will be travelling from California to Georgia in late October. We plan to stop and see the Grand Canyon (North Rim), and Zion and Bryson N.P.

Would Kanab, Ut be the best place to stay, or could you please suggest alternatives if any.

Thanks!!

However, instead of Bryce, you may consider heading towards 4-corners, and Mesa Verde NP after Zion. That way you can stay in Page, AZ which has a few more options than Kanab. You can also tour the Glen Canyon Dam in Page.

If you do go to Bryce, Ruby's Inn Campground is right outside the park. That saves you from having to backtrack from Kanab.

Safe travels!

From late October on, the North rim can get snow. Check the weather reports/forecasts as you travel. It's a long drive from Kanab, UT to the North Rim, there is a campground at the intersection of the main highway and the one to the North Rim. It is still about 25-30 miles from that CG to the North Rim. Why not stay in the North Rim primitive CG? It is walking distance to the Rim viewpoints and trails.

In late October the North Rim campground will be closed but if the road going from Jacob Lake (no lake, by the way) to the North Rim is still snow-free then the North Rim park will still be open for a look-see at the canyon. Kanab would be a good base for that.

For Zion and Bryce, it would really be better to stay in or near each one. There's a lot of driving involved.

If you have the time you might consider this route if coming north on I-15:

At St. George, Utah, take Hwy 9 east to Zion N.P. If you don't want to stay in the park at Watchman campground, there's a RV park in nearby Springdale.

Google Zion Tunnel and see if your RV is eligible to go through. If so, continue on Hwy 9, through the tunnel to Hwy 89 and south to Kanab if you want to drive the the North Rim for a day.

If your RV is too big for the tunnel, take Hwy 9 west again to Hurricane and pick up Utah 59 toward Colorado City which then becomes AZ389 to Fredonia and a short drive north on AZ/UT89 to Kanab.

If you want to do Zion but not the North Rim and your RV is too big for the Zion tunnel, then from Zion, backtrack to St. George, UT and head north on I-15 and pick up Hwy 20 east to Hwy 89. Head south on 89 to Hwy 12 and east to Bryce.

Hope this helps and have a good trip!

Plan to arrive @ Kanab around 11AM.
From Kanab, can we do GCNP in one afternoon, and Zion/Bryce the next full day?
Perhaps we need to eliminate either Zion or Bryce and devote a full day to one.

I know you California people are jet setters but come on. Why don't you rent a plane fly over all three at 10000 feet above ground level. You can see all three in a couple hours, now you have SEEN them. All kidding aside you need a full day at each to even start to see part of the sights. HAVE you looked at the distance from one to the other or the driving distance in each, oh and you will be riding a shuttle in Zion other than the highway through the park.

Yes, from Kanab you could drive to Grand Canyon and spend the afternoon. However, you need more than one day to visit both Zion and Bryce, especially if you're staying in Kanab. It's a lot of driving. If this is all the time you have at least you'll be getting a smidgen look at the parks and you can come back for more. Both Zion and Bryce are excellent hiking parks - easy and hard hikes. To do each park justice we would allow at least 3 nights at Zion and Bryce. Obviously, you'll on a very tight schedule so just do what you can.

Yes, our schedule is tight because by the time we get to the Kanab area we will have been on the road over 50 days, and need to get back home to Georgia.

However we can always change our plans: How about GNP and a day each at Zion and Bryce ??; or GNP and 2 days at EITHER Zion or Bryce??

Right now we are just trying to get a "taste", rather than driving past and missing these sights alltogether.

ps: my knees are shot and extensive hiking is a poor option.

Personally, having been to all three many times, route yourself to spend a day at each. Staying in or near each one will save you many hours of driving and more time to see the park. They are all so very different and you really need to see all of them - if you have time.

One day is much better than none and hopefully, you can return to that area. There's lots more to see.

However, if you want to eliminate one, I would not do the North Rim of the Grand Canyon but that's just our preference. Hope it works for you.

Please suggest RV parks near Zion and Bryce. Thanks!!

You can check out some reviews of RV parks here:

Reviews of RV Parks and Campgrounds - RV Park Reviews

We always try to stay in the parks themselves and for Zion, Watchman campground is our choice. It has electric, dump station and water fill. If you want full hookups, Zion Canyon RV just outside the park entrance is in Springdale. It would be very convenient for using the park's free shuttle into the canyon The pleasant little town has some restaurants and small shops. There are other RV parks farther away in Virgin and Hurricane.

For Bryce and for having hookups, I'd go for Ruby's, at the park entrance. Shops, restaurant, laundry. You could easily drive your car for viewing Bryce. At that time of year the viewpoints would not be crowded for parking. There are plenty of other RV parks in either direction on Hwy 12 and also in the town of Panguitch.

If you decide on including Grand Canyon North Rim, keep in mind that the park facilities will be closed (restaurant, shops) but if the main road going in (Hwy 64) is still free of snow, you'll still be able to catch some views of the canyon. The best place for staying would be at Kanab RV Corral. You could also stay there and try to work in both Grand Canyon and Zion from Kanab but it's a lot of driving and you don't have a lot of time.

Safe travels!

We stayed in Knab and drove to the north rim it'a about 70 or 75 miles. toured Bryce one day and Zion the next. Make sure to see Bryce for sure. Safe travels. We had our toad so driving around was made simple. Jim

Panguitch, UT is about 20 miles from Bryce. We stayed at the Hitch N Post Campground there. Nice town, nice campground.
Kanab is fairly close to Zion. Also a nice town. Utah is beautiful. Have fun!

Stopped by the north rim one year on last day of October. There were a couple rangers there moving things out of the lodge. Lodge was closed. Road was open and had light snow on it. You could walk to anyplace you would want but there were maybe 10 people around there.
Was cold and most likely road would be closed soon??
