Need a Trip to The Mountains

Well just finishing up our beach adventure and are looking for a good place to do some hiking, mountain biking, white water rafting, and Yes, looking for a great place to park for 4-6 days, with a pool, and maybe even A river.

What is your favorite Mountain RV camping area and why....

Simple Colorado - Buena Vista - has a lot to offer as do the San Juan's and SteamBoat Springs.

But if I had to Pick Right Now - Buena Vista - just so much variety and versatility in options. Add to that it's a 100 degrees here in Maryland so the 45 degrees in Leadville is very attractive.

JMHO,

We come to the Smokies every year. This is our first year in a new campground. We're at Camp LeConte in Gatlinburg, TN. It borders GSMNP, there's hiking, fishing, horseback riding and white water rafting. You're also on the
Coal shuttle route, $.50 a ride, so you're very close to great restaurants etc.

East or west? Pisgah if east - the dogs can hike. Lake Powhatan has RV spots but not sure if 43'

West - gallatin NF and Teton/Bridger - because the dogs can hike and mountains are awesome. Same with the Canadian Rockies - dogs allowed almost all trails.

Banff or Jasper in Alberta, for sure. Neither have pools on site, but they do have amazing hot springs not far away. Mountain biking in Jasper is stellar.

Probably not just a quick jaunt from Tennessee, though!

If you want to Mountain Bike in Colorado...

When you say "mountains" I think COLORADO. These are some of my favorites:

Between Buena Vista and Salida/Poncha Springs, CO, are some amazing camp spots. Pick one as a basecamp. In the area, we used to ride the Monarch Crest Trail (MTB trail) which starts at the summit of Monarch Pass, about 20 miles or so from the valley. From the summit, believe it or not, the trail climbs above timberline, follows the Continental Divide for about a mile to 11,800 feet before beginning about a 25 mile [mostly] downhill. I think they offer a shuttle at the bottom that will take your crew and their bikes to the top. It would still be a fun ride, except I'm no spring chicken anymore. Note: all of the serious climbing is in the first five miles).

Also closeby is an out-and-back ride up Cottonwood Pass. Beautiful scenery and fun trails. Also gets above timberline.

Monarch Crest - IMBA Epic Mountain Bike Trail, Salida, Colorado

Check out the downhill rides at Winter Park (another part of the state) if you are an adrenaline junky. Look for coupons -- it's not a free lunch to ride there. Around $25-30, I think.

Trestle® Bike Park - Home

These trails kicked my butt, and the only camping was a nearby KOA (as I recall), but they are made by mountain-bikers for mountain bikers. Lots of fun. One of the trails will take you 150 miles west to Moab, UT. The Colorado National Monument area is a whole different kind of Colorado.

This is a little hard to answer without knowing what part of the country you are in but for the southeast I would head for the mountains of Tn, GA, NC. For the west, we are now in route to Montrose, Gunnison and Buena Vista, CO
