X2. Been there three times and so far my favorite if you are able to snag a spot on the overlook.

We stayed at Asheville's Bear Creek RV Park, some years back. We could look across the valley to see the lights of the hotel and estate.

Thanks for the suggestions

I was all set to call Big Bear and then work my way down a list that had everyones suggestions but on a whim I called Mama Gerties back and they had an opening on a lower level. I took it. Thanks again for all your suggestions. This will be my long trip this year so now I am going to plan out all the other stops and activities around this destination.

Was going to recommend Bear Creek, but see you've made your reservations. Really like the campground, and it's closer to town than Powhatan, which is nice and quiet in the forest.
Happy trails.
