We are planning a trip to the Canadian east coast this summer. Can anyone tell me if hwy 138, along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is reasonable to drive towing a 22' trailer? I basically want to get from Blanc-Sablon to Baie-Comeau without taking any ferries. Thanks for any help or route suggestions.
Jim

Hi Jim: We were parked near Quebec City last fall (06) and took a day trip with friends along Hwy 138 all the way up to Tadoussac. That drive has been one of our fondest memories and although we didn't take our 40 ft. motorhome along the route (we took friends 350 pickup), we wouldn't hesitate taking that drive with our motorhome next time....ALTHOUGH...there are a few VERY, VERY steep grades along the way....one was 18%!!! (yes, that's one/eight). It's two lane paved highway all the way to Tadoussac and not all that wide, but do-able. We've never towed a trailer, but it sure looks to me like you'd not experience a problem if ya take it slow down the few steep grades (engine brakes and trailer brakes would be good). NOW, here's the downer. There is a FREE (part of the hwy. system) ferry that you have to take in order to cross the fjord into Tadoussac (or ya can't continue). It's a large, VERY easy On/Off ferry and a great ride! Ya might even see whales during the crossing. Also, be sure to take time to visit Tadoussac and walk their wonderful boardwalk around the point at the head of the fjord. As said, we don't know what the route is like between Tadoussac and Baie-Comeau, but the drive from Quebec to Tadoussac was FABULOUS, including vast, panoramic vistas overlooking towns, the river and gorgeous hills. We'd STRONGLY recommend that route. Even if you don't take the trailer, take a day trip up that way. It's BEAUTIFUL. Hope this helps a little. Steve & Lynette
