Need Ideas ~ Southern NM
Looking to travel through southern New Mexico for 3-4 days mid to late March and was looking for suggestions on what to see. We're thinking Carlsbad Caverns for sure, but would appreciate you sharing your other "must sees".

Just a little north of Carlsbad Caverns is Roswell, N. M. There is an interesting museum there, The National UFO Museum. It might be worth a day trip. Mark

White Sands
Three Rivers Petroglyphs
Lincoln
Ft. Stanton
Old Mesilla
City of Rocks
Faywood Hot Springs
Gila Cliff Dwellings
In March, the migratory birds might still be at Bitter Lakes Refuge

The Caverns are definitely a must see. Halfwright put together a good list for the remainder of your time.

Just remember, the road to Carlsbad does not have many [if any] "fuel" stations, so fill up before you head that way.

When we visited(9-'11)the bridge to Sitting Bull Falls was out, so we missed seeing that. We used Carlsbad RV and CG as a base, not much to write home about but it was waaay better than the rundown CG at the road leading into the Park. It's close into town for fuel and a meal out. We got to see the bat's exit twice, really a spectacular sight as is the cavern itself.

There are also a couple of great wildlife reserves in the area that are great for birding if you are into that. Take the candlelight tour through the NP cavern for a really unique view off the beaten path (reservations required). Lots of great New Mexican food (try both red and green chili - they are different at every location).

Smokey the Bear's grave and museum is on the Billy the Kid trail. It is just down the road from Lincoln. And further west is the Valley of Fire.

City of Rocks. We loved Oliver Lee State Park & White Sands. We spent an entire day just at NM Space Museum in Alamogordo. Give yourself plenty of time there for sure.
