My son, the marine, is returning from Iraq mid-October we'd like to be there when he returns. Looking for a big rig friendly CG near the Cherry Point.
Thanks
Pat

CaptPat,
Ask you son to check with the RV Park on-site there at Cherry Point. It is W/30A/S but the sites are small and close. They will handle a 40Ft Class a, but it is tight. It will be very convenient for visiting. He will have to get you a temporary base pass when you go through the gate. There are several CG's within 20 miles of CP, includng New Bern, NC, where there is a KOA and a few other CG's.
Someone should be along that has more information on the area. It has been 30+ years since I was stationed there.

CaptPat,
Call Cherry Point CG and ask if they allow visitors that are sponsored. Your son will be the sponsor. Since he is not going to be there to sponsor you, call and ask to speak to the SgtMaj or 1stSgt of the command he is coming back to. If Cherry Point does allow sponsorship at the CG, explain the situation to the SgtMaj or 1stSgt and ask if they will sponsor you. Most CG's allow sponsorship for short stays and once established the sponsor does not have to stay with you. - That is if you do decide to stay on-base. If you do need any help with CP, let me know and I'll do what I can in finding the information for you.

thanks for the info. I'm a retired Navy guy (28+ yrs) so I don't think getting access onto the base will be a problem. I've heard that the base CG is small and may not accommodate my 43 ft MH. Perhaps the New Bern KOA is the next best option.

I thought that was the Capt part.
There are a few CG's in the area. One easy way to see what is available is to go to Your web browser and the Maps site are incompatible and put in the city name in the map search pane. Then, when the city pops up, change the map search pane to "RV Park," or "Campground," or "Mexican Restuarant," (without the quotes) and you will get a side bar with CG's in the area, or whatever you searched on. You can move the map around and the CG's will repopulate.
Are you familiar with the military campgrounds web site? It does have some reviews on CP that do indicate the sites are tight. You could call and ask.
Happy trails
Semper Fi!

CaptPat,
I have been to New Bern KOA and will return. The CG will handle your rig and is well kept. When I was last there, I took the time to look at other camp grounds in the area. I don't want to say I have seen them all because I have not but I did not see any that would compare to NB KOA. I will be back there around Columbus Day. Only word of advice is to make reservations early as they seem to stay pretty busy.
Good luck & safe travels

Cherry Point has a couple of sites you would fit in with no problem. We stayed there a couple of times in our 38 foot rig. The camphost is willing to work with you. Granted it isn't a spectacular campground, basically it is a lot next to the commissary, but it is on base. The KOA is about a 15-20 minute drive away. For convenience I would check with the base first.
