need some ideas for Minnesota

We will be leaving on Sept 7 for a month trip to Minnesota, and are looking for some recommendations for campgrounds and places to see. Will be traveling up I-35 from Oklahoma through Duluth and up hwy 61 along the shores of Lake Superior. Would like to take some side trips, hoping the rig is not too long for some of those. Thanks in advance for information...Gary

Wife and I now full time as we've sold our home and stuff in Duluth back in 05 and have been "on da road" ever since. You'll really enjoy the N. Shore of Lake Superior, but there aren't a whole lot of RV campgrounds up in this area. You'll be O.K. w. your 38 ftr. but it'd be a good idea to call ahead for spots. There's a good park in Two Harbors right on the Lake Superior, and....I'd strongly suggest calling Lakehead Boat Basin (Marina) and RV located right in Duluth on the harbor and right adjacent to what is called "Canal Park". Great place to see world wide shipping move under the famous lift bridge and ya can walk to Canal Park (shops/resaurants/museums/aquarium, etc.).

However.......since you're coming up I-35, ya might want to plan at least an overnight in Hinckley, MN located about 1/2 way between Minneapolis and Duluth, Great Hinckley Casino Campground!!! THEN, when leaving Hinckley for Duluth, consider detouring OFF I-35 taking MN Rt. 48 EASTWARD from Hinckley to Danbury, Wisconsin then followiing Wisc. Rt. 35 NE a VERY short dist. and then Rt. 77 NE over to Hwy. 53 heading N. into Minog, Wisc. and on up into Superior, Wisc. and staying on 53 over the high bridge between Superior, Wisc. and Duluth! WHEW!!!...sound complicated but really isn't and the REASON for doing this is that....if you approach Duluth staying on I-35 they are presently under a HEAVY construction and vehicle size restriction for a number of miles coming into and in part of Duluth proper. AS SUCH...they detour trucks and, yes, your RV, Northward quite awhile before ya get to Dulut, and then through a hellacious route to get into down, including twists, turns, and VERY VERY steep downhill city streets. DON'T GO THAT WAY!! This is why I suggest the Wisconsin bypass route out of Hinckley, and just as ya come off that high bridge into Duluth from Superior, take the "Garfield Ave." exit on the Duluth end of the bridge about 5 -6 blocks and take Railroad Street to your right on to Lake Ave. then if stopping at Lakehead Boat Basin & RV, follow Lake Ave. right going over the famous Aerial Bridge then 3 blocks to a R. on 10th St. right into Lakehead Marina/RV. When leaving Duluth you'll again pick up I-35 right where ya turned at Lake Ave. and head North.

Sorry for making this so complicated, BUT...ya won't regret bypassing the construction detour issue.

Hope this helps ya out.

Steve & Lynette

whew, I need to copy all of that down, but sure sounds like a life saver and (fuel saver). Thanks very much for all of the information, as I would have just followed I-35 like a good little boy and run into all of that problem. The places that you mentioned like Lakehead boat and basin rv sounds like a nice place to stay. Thanks again Steve for all the information, and should you think of anything else, please email or pm..Gary
