Nevada for RVers

Johnny Cash once said, "I have been everywhere man". But, most RVers have not ...

So, I was thinking the other day ... Oh no, DW has that look that I know so well every time I get to thinking ... I told her, no really, I was thinking that RVers want to go and see places, but they don't much enjoy burning diesel just to get there ... So, I said to self, "Self, why not ask others at the irv2 forum for feedback before you start them engines ..."

So, what I'm looking to do is get feedback from others that are familiar with specific states to help snowbirds and sunbirds with their travels.

Since Nevada is a favorite place for many RVers ...

What parts of Nevada do you recommend for other RVers? ... What parts would you put in the category of not worth the diesel needed to get there?

I think, in time, we could build a database from threads like this for each state in the US, places in Canada, Alaska, etc.

Yosemite to Wendover

A couple of years ago we headed east out of Yosemite to cross Nevada. Highways 120 to 6 to 93. It was a perfect drive. We had an incredible sunset. The terrain was much more varied than I-80. We overnighted w/o hookups. It was just an incredible drive through a wonderful desert.

Nevada for RVers

We just spent the last month traveling through Nevada and had a wonderful time. We chose to go from the south to the Extraterrestrial Highway (coz I love that kind of stuff) and then along the western side up to Hwy 50. We found interesting stuff to see and do everywhere we went. I put all my pics in blog posts so I hope you don't mind me including those. My fav highlights:

Lake Mead and Hoover Dam...wonderful. Lots of interesting hiking around the area, plus Vegas is cool if you've never been:

Valley of Fire State Park near Las Vegas...just amazing. Absolute "must see":

Petroglyphs in Lincoln Valley...excellent history:

The Extraterrestrial Highway. A ton of fun if you like that kind of stuff (I really, really do):

The Ammo museum in Hawthorne...totally unexpected:

We boondocked most of the way. Nevada has enormous amounts of BLM land and is just perfect for this (I've got all the details on the blog if you want). Otherwise there are plenty of inexpensive RV parks along the way.

We have yet to do the central and Eastern part of Nevada, but I have many things on my list for those areas. We're coming back!

There is not a lot of civilization across Nevada, East-West, but there are lots of interesting sites. I would suggest taking US 50 all the way from California to Utah and I-15. Do a Google search, or even look at Wikipedia to see the variety of things to see. This route takes you through lots of mining and left behind places, plus some of the most incredible natural sites. Look at a few, such as Lehman Caves, Blue Lake on the East and the Gold rush towns of the Western edge. Even check out Kennecotts Mine outside Ely.
