New Brunswick, Nova Scotia & PEI

Hi all,

We're heading out next Wed. to visit friends in Maine for a couple of days, then on to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI. I've searched through the threads here for info on all 3 places and I've made notes, but I'd appreciate anything else you'd like to share regarding places to stay and things to do.

Even though this isn't the routing forum, anything we need to know along those lines would also be appreciated (and saves me starting another thread in that forum). The only thing about routing we're sure of at this point is taking the ferry over to PEI and leaving via the bridge. We're a 31 ft RV towing a 4 door, 4X4 Wrangler.

To give you some guidance:

We're not into resort-type cgs with a million things to do - prefer quiet, more natural settings. While water and electric (30amp) are preferred, we can dry camp for a few days if a place is worth it. Sewer at site not necessary, but a handy dump station is nice.

We have some things we know we want to do - like Hopewell Rocks, Cabot Trail, Peggy's Cove and Lighthouse, etc. But I know there are tons more that we'll regret not doing if we miss them.

We're both avid amateur photographers who love anything picturesque - animals, scenery, lighthouses, interesting geologic features. Enjoy day hiking and off-the-beaten-path spots and things that aren't necessarily in guide books (like the bottle house on PEI). We want to eat lots of local food and listen to authentic local music.

This will be our only trip up this far for a few years, so we want to make the most of it. Thanks for any help you can give us.

You might want to go and see Magnetic hill in Moncton New Brunswick.....use All Stay to find your campgrounds.....I was stationed up in Caribou Maine for 4 years, when we had time off, we would fish throughtout the area. If you plan to come back thru Maine, you would like to visit Arcadia National Park.....pictures galore....it's a must.

IF you'll still be near Cape Breton in early October, you might want to check out Celtic Colours International Festival, a celtic music festival held annually in October in communities all over Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. Not "local" music. Many of the communities host community meals.

Acadia NP is beautiful. We visited our Maine friends (Kennebunk and Portlland) a few years ago then headed up the coast as far as Lubec and crossed to Campobello Island. Stopped at ANP, including the Schoodic part, along the way. Didn't have enough time then to go any farther, hence this trip.

I don't know if we'll be able to stay in Cape Breton that long or not, but the festival does sound wonderful. Thanks for that link.

FloridaFran - Seaview Campground in Eastport Maine is a great stop ever. It is about 35 miles to the Calais Maine border crossing. Great views on Passamaquoddy Bay.

We're currently in the middle of a week in Bar Harbor, Maine after spending the past three weeks in Canada... culminating in just the areas you'll be visiting.

We really enjoyed it but I don't think I can add much to the local expertise you've already gotten. We are 40 feet and usually based the coach in a park with FHU and used the toad to explore places like PEI.

One spot which is worth mentioning was on the Bay of Fundy. I had wanted to visit the bay for a long time and we found The Old Shipyard CG on Spencer's Island. It's not much more than a little spit of gravel but the sites are only 50' from the water at high tide and you can hike way out on the bay floor at low tide. There's a great little restaurant on site but everything else is really remote.

The power wasn't very reliable since my SurgeGuard kept kicking us off line for low voltage... and the wifi was very spotty from the FHU sites... but it was all about location... until a storm nearly blew us off the island. Lots of road construction along the way.

A must see is the Cabot Trail.
We stayed here: North Sydney/Cabot Trail KOA Campground Cape Breton Nova Scotia
Great view of the Atlantic, bridge & lake, very quiet, & ask for the top tier of the park for the best view. Grouse and turkey came right up to our door.
Sites were pretty level, all back in, good Wi-Fi and utilities.
The Cabot Trail is just a short drive away.

If you can stop at St Martins NB. We camped at the Century Farm Family Campground and watched the tide go out and come in right from our front window. Take a look at this link and you will want to go there. Home | Fundy Trail Parkway
