New England Foliage Base Camps
Hello,
Bucket List 3-week tour of the NE next Oct 2020. We have a Class B 24’...our traveling friends are pulling a 21’ trailer with a Dodge 2500. We are tentatively planning to loop up from Albany NY area thru upper Vermont, NH, into southern Me, then down the Me coast to Boston, Cape Cod, Nantucket, then back thru Conn/RI. We would appreciate any recommendations where to make 3-night base camps along this New Eng loop. Love nature, short hikes, wildlife/waterfowl. Prefer State Parks or better Private RV parks. TIA for any help.

We did a similar trip many years ago.
I suggest making reservations as soon as possible because there are a lot of Leaf Peepers in that area.

Check well ahead of time on whether the places you want to stay are even open the days you intend to camp. And make reservations if they are - lots of "leaf peepers" vying for what's still open, especially on weekends.
Many/most in Maine close by Columbus Day weekend; some even earlier (Oct. 1 or mid-September). Vermont, NH, and upstate NH aren't far behind.

Northern New England is the best for foliage around Columbus Day weekend. Pretty much from Burlington VT, to the White Mountains in NH and across to the Maine coast and North of there. Check out the White Mountains, there are different campgrounds all around there. Check out Umbagog campground on the NH-Maine border. Check out the "new" campground across the water from Bar Harbor, the name escapes me at the moment. You can try Salisbury State Park and Scusset State Park in Massachusetts after Columbus Day. Rhode Island has Fishermans Memorial State Park after Columbus Day. You can park for free at Mohegun Sun in CT which is a parking lot with a nice view and a casino. I'm not sure if the CT stateparks will be open for camping after Columbus Day.

Scusset will be the closest to Cape Cod that will be open. It may only be open on weekends at that point. The Nantucket Ferry leaves out on the Cape as you can imagine.
Fishermans Memorial in Rhode Island is right down the road from the Block Island ferry. New London CT also has ferries to Block Island.

Double check Nickerson State Campground on the Cape. I'm not sure when they close for the season.

Reservations are a must because so many campgrounds shut down early. There is a KOA in Mystic CT that is open all year, but they shut down the water to most of the sites for the season at the first sign of a freeze. Great foliage in all of New England, not just way up north. In fact, CT makes more maple syrup than VT and NH combined!
I spent Thanksgiving week at the KOA and had to fill my water tank on my way in because the water was already off. They discounted the site considerably. I even ended up getting snowed in for an extra day. Easy access to I-95.
I still have family in Rhode Island and I return there at least annually. Many of the campgrounds throughout New England have a high percentage of the sites set aside for seasonal clients. Another reason to make sure you have reservations.

We made a very similar trip this past October. We secured all of our reservations well in advance.
Really enjoyed The Moorings in Belfast, ME. We found out about it through a review on this site. Took a quick peek at Scusset Beach state park while on the cape. That looks like a nice spot. Hope to add it to our itinerary if we get up that way again.
Vermont and Maine offered one postcard worthy view after the next. Enjoy!!

The foliage normally peaks in Northern New England around Columbus Day weekend. The color starts peaking south of that about a week at a time. Unless we have a cold September the colors in Massachusetts and Connecticut start peaking in the middle to late October.
Schoodic Campground in Maine I believe was redone in the last couple of years. Rocky Neck and Hammonasett state parks in CT may or may not be open. Hammonasett's campground has been redone in the last couple of years as well.

Fishermens in R.I. is a nice state park and closes last day of October. Weekends fill up fast with locals, you’d be better to check in weekdays. Ask for Area 1 there, much nicer sites. There is also Burlingame State Park not far away. For RV Resort, try Ashway RV Resort on the CT/RI line.
I think most state campgrounds in VT close October 12.
Don’t miss Acadia NP in Maine and try to stay at one of the campgrounds.
We like Atlantic Oakes in Eastham on the Cape. But you may want to stay closer to the ferry terminals if you’re planning to go to Nantucket.

We spent a week at Mountain Lake Campground on Rt 3 near Lancaster NH this past fall. Good location to see a lot of northern NH/VT plus drove The Kanc and up to Black Lake & Lake Francis looking for moose. Weeks State park is also nearby. The sites in the front loop of the park have awesome views over the lake.
