New England in the fall?

Any suggestions of great places to camp in New England end of Sept/beginning of October to take advantage of the fall foliage? We are used to camping in state parks and enjoy well-treed, private sites.

Pine Hollow near Bennington, VT was nice two years ago. Might go back this fall. Good area for day tripping out of a base camp into western MA, eastern NY or VT.

Connecticut just BARELY counts as New England!

Come join us in northern New England!!!

Foliage colors descend across New England like a curtain, starting in northern Vermont and kind of heading southeast towards the Rhode Island area. To get the most bang for your buck (travels...), consider starting a bit further north in VT or NH, then you can actually travel along with them! You can certainly end up in Fall glory in southern New England - CT actually has a lot of beautiful areas, too!

Peak foliage up north is right around Columbus Day. Be aware that many CGs also close up for the season at that time. Since it is such a short window of opportunity, do expect CGs to fill up, at least on the weekends. ST

It seems to me that one could start even earlier in northern Maine then down to NH/VT and then on south.

Sept into Oct will be to early to see great color in Ct. later Oct is the best time there. As others have mentioned the further you head north the better and I would certainly plan some time in Maine, Vt and NH while you are here. Adirondacks and beautiful also. If you are going to stay in Ct be sure to visit the western area of the state. Very nice out there.

I lived in Maine for 40 years. Late September is normally too early to catch peak color in Bar Harbor. The colors in Northern New England generally peak in late September in the mountains but don’t peak near the shore until mid October. Color and timing vary from year to year so it is impossible to predict the actual dates.

There are several CGs in the Lake George area, and you'll be right in the middle of it all. From there Rt 4 to Rutland and then Rt 100 up the mountains of Vermont. It's a gorgeous highway.

Color is weather dependent, not calendar dependent. What you really should do is keep flexible and watch the web for when the color is peaking in various parts of the NE. Peak can vary by weeks depending on when the cold hits.
