Wife and I are thinking of taking a trip to New Mexico Oct 15-23.

I know nothing about that area but have heard that Red River is very popular.

Is this too late in the year for a trip?

What are your favourite things to see and do in New Mexico?

That's a perfect time to go and Red River is very nice. You'll probably be seeing aspen in color. You'll be close to touring Taos and Santa Fe. We really enjoy Santa Fe - always something happening and excellent restaurants. Santa Fe Skies RV is nice.

Generally lovely. But last time we were in Taos it was mid Oct and it snowed!!!

Thanks for input, weather is a bit of a concern. Light snow not an issue but heavy is of course.

I'll check out Sante Fe Skies......

NM is a big state with a wide variety of weather from north to south. In the higher elevations of northern NM mid Oct is the transition from summer to winter. Red River and the surrounding areas at 8500 ft or higher elevations may be sunny and nice or stormy and cold depending on the weather patterns that year. If a storm does come through in Oct, whether its rain or snow, its short and typically the sun will be back out the next day.
In the lower elevations of southern NM mid Oct is still in the 90's and those areas are hoping some of those northern storms bring some cool air down south.

VLA (Very Large Array) west of Socorro

Valley of Fires (west of Carizozo

Trinity Site (open tour twice a year)

I lived in NM for several years, absolutely loved it.

Of course, every year will be different. Santa Fe is lower elevation than Red River.

Wife says she would like to try some boondocking on this trip. She has a new camera (Canon 6D) she wants to put through its paces.

Big state - where might you be headed? - what else are you interested in - In October i'd tend to stay north of I-40 - if Water is and Interest look at Navajo Lake State Park - because of it's location you would have access to a large variety of terrain, making for great photo op's.

Chama is a space we have always wanted to visit - enjoy the trip - it's a great time to be in the area, be sure to get back to us on what you saw and did.

That time of October will be very difficult to find camping in the Albuquerque area because of the international balloon fiesta. If going to Santa Fe check out the Palace of the Governors for touring and also Native jewelry. Taos, Red River, Angel Fire all glorious with the leaves changing.

Some of the RV parks around Red River/Taos/Angel Fire/Eagle Nest shut down starting Oct 1st timeframe. So check to be sure where you are going. Weather should be cool nights and nice days. Could get light snow, but not heavy snow at that time. Should still be some color on the trees, but a bit late for that. Also nothing like the colors back east, mostly yellow to brown here.

Balloon Fiesta in ABQ is beginning of Oct, so the main rush of people will be gone by the time you are in NM.

Go a bit east form Red River and get to Chama, ride the Cumbres and Toltec steam railroad, a nice day trip.
