New Orleans Suggestions

We are in the planning stages for next year and are thinking of going back to New Orleans. Any suggestions on campgrounds? I have looked at the campground reviews for the area, I am looking for first hand advise. Also I know it is hot in the summer, so I am looking for suggestions on the time of the year. We want to see some sights and listen to some good music while we are there. We are retired so we don't have time constraints.

We often stay at one of these 3 Louisiana State Parks:
Bayou Segnette
Fountainebleau...(say "Hay" to Le Roy and Jessy, the camp hosts in the old section).
Fairview-Riverside (say "Hay" to Dave and Sandy).

All are nice/clean with asphalt pads and 50 amp electric.
(We aren't "RV resort" people).

I will second Fountainbleau State Park... it is just plain lovely... especially during the weekdays.... weekends can get crowded. We were thoroughly pleased with Mandeville, and the variety of restaurants.... a "must visit" is Liz's Where Ya At café.... breakfast or lunch... bring your appetite. The Rusty Pelican has some great po boys.... :-) The farmer's market/craft sale on the weekends is rather special and be sure to bring your bicycles for the extensive trail system at the park and around the town. In New Orleans..... make a trek over to Crabby Jacks... lunch only.... but is the epitome of New Orleans cuisine...... best wishes... be safe and have fun.

We have stayed at French Quarter RV Resort, It was our #1 campground to have ever stayed at But Anchor Down RV Resort in Sevierville Tn is tied with it now.
French Quarter RV is down town and about 2 blocks from Bourbon St. I would say go either JUST BEFORE Mardi Gras or a couple weeks after Mardi Gras. We really enjoyed the stay there.

We stayed at Bayou Segnette in Westwego last August. Really nice, clean and not too far from New Orleans. What is especially nice is that your America the Beautiful Senior pass is accepted and we were able to stay for just $11.00 per day, of course all Louisiana State Parks take the pass. We spent most of our time in the Quarter going from restaurant, really great food.

We too stayed in and enjoyed the Segnette Park in Westwego. We were there in June and it was hot and humid. But, it is still a great place to stay. They did NOT honor our Park Pass. Even though the pass is federal it is apparently a state level thing. We are from California and they do not have any reciprocity with Louisiana so we were denied. But, the rates are very reasonable and it was not a show-stopper. RVPark Reviews, which we use for most of our trip planning did not seem to have much nice to say about other parks closer to the city.

Not entirely TRUE!
Since 2011 Louisiana state parks have only honored the "America the Beautiful senior pass" IF you are a Louisiana resident or a resident of a state which also honors the pass at their state parks!

You are correct, I just looked it up on the States website and it does say that. I stand corrected.

Bayou Segnette is a secured park, they have gates that close at night to limit people from driving in, and park police patrols.

We have stayed there ( and will be going back again) and have felt very safe. The park itself is walled off and has security gates for both vehicles and foot traffic. The police station is almost across the street. We walked the quarter day and night and had no issues or concerns with safety. But, since the park is in the middle town next to the interstate, there is a lot of traffic and emergency vehicle noise at night .

You are right about that!
One afternoon in 2011, (while driving our toad in New Orleans), we where "pulled over" by a NO police car and advised by the officer to "stay out of that area of New Orleans".....(that did not exactly give us a warm fuzzy feeling about the city)!

That would depend on where in the city you was at. I agree New Orleans may not be the safest town, but all cities have these areas.
