Newly retired, new owner of 2005 National Tropical T396 and ready for the road

My wife and I just retired. We purchased a well maintained National Tropical. We are planning our first trip from Northern California to Idaho and any place in between. Considering heading north to Washington and making a loop back to Blackfoot Idaho. Any recommendations for places to go? Best routes? Any advice for a new motorhome owner.

I have been getting used to driving the RV. A bit of a change from towing a trailer.

Hi surphknut,
Welcome to iRV2. As an East Coaster, my definition of Northern California starts at San Francisco.
1. Consider San Francisco RV Resort as a place to stay. Go to San Francisco RV Resort | Park your RV on the Cliffs overlooking the Pacific Coastline | Pacifica, California and check it out. There is good and bad about everything. This place is no exception.
The Bad is:
1. The spaces are very tight.
2. The place is a paved parking lot.
The good is:
1. Very close to SF.
2. Right on the Pacific Ocean (on a cliff). The sunsets are magnificent.

Up the coast are the big trees.

In Washington, stop and see Mt. St Helens National Volcanic Monument. Go to USGS: Volcano Hazards Program - Mount St. Helens Geology and History and check it out. We stayed along I5 and did the North side on day one and the south side on day 2. The visitor's center is on the north side of the monument. The north side has a view of the crater and the blast zone. The south side has lava tubes one can enter. These are gigantic lave tubes. One (each person) must have their own illumination (consider a backup too). Once inside the lava tube it is pitch black.

In Idaho, consider a stop at Craters of the Moon National Monument. The park is on flat ground. However, wear good hiking shoes. The ah ah lava will teat up a pair of sneakers. Go to Craters Of The Moon National Monument & Preserve (U.S. National Park Service) and check it out. There is a KOA a few mines from the Monument.

See crater lake which is just inside OR and is stunning. The OR state parks are awesome and most of them have power and water with a dump station. The OR coast is absolutely gorgeous and well worth the time to explore. Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Cody, WY and the hot springs/museums. On the way back consider NP's Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, & Valley of Fire SP in NV which is a great place to explore with large campsites with power and water in about half of them. This could be a long list but enjoy your travels!

:welcome;

Glad to have you here with us.

While it may extend the distance of your trip crossing into Montana to visit Glacier Nat'l park is definitely worth the extra travel.

Best of luck and Happy Trails!

good sams trip planner - well worth the cost.

google maps in satellite view on an ipad - well worth the cost of the ipad! You can zoom right in to view actual parking lots, turns, entrances, signs and other on road navigation hazards BEFORE you get to them I never enter a walmart parking lot without first studying the entrances, exits, space to turn around. You can also examine campgrounds carefully before booking.

rand mcnally or megellin RV gps - well worth the cost.

campgroundreviews.com - totally free!

overnightrvparking.com - well worth the 24 dollars per year. Sometimes you just need a simple overnighter somewhere easy.
