My wife and I are planning a trip to the Niagara Falls area this summer. Neither one of us has ever been there. We will be celebrating her 60th birthday and our 40th wedding anniversary in the same time frame so we are making this a second honeymoon. Yes, I missed marrying a teenager by three days!! We will be coming from the west on I80/90. On the way back we will be swinging by Saginaw Michigan to visit some friends. We are looking for advice on things to see and do other than the normal "tourist trap" things. We like the unusual scenic and or historical sites.

A side note, our first honeymoon 40 years ago was in a small rented popup with nothing other than a roof and a bed. It will be much more comfortable this time in our 35ft Chieftain. Our daughter says "you don't camp, you relocate".

You should consider going to the Henry Ford Museum and historic village in Dearborn Michigan. It is well worth your time. I will also celebrate 60 years this summer.

Take time to enjoy everything the falls has to offer... perhaps a couple of days in the area. From the Canadian side, we went on the Maid of the Mist, went to the IMAX theater. Be sure to take your "bride" to lunch or dinner at the restaurant that overlooks the falls... the view is spectacular.

Also in the area, we went to a dinner show called "Oh Canada, Eh?" A well-done, cute spoof that the Canadians do about themselves. I don't know if it is still running in the area, but check it out.

It is a beautiful area. Enjoy yourselves. Happy birthday and anniversary. In another 6 years you'll catch up to us.

If you like flowers and a nice place to visit, make sure when you cross the rainbow bridge to Canada that you turn right and go to Niagara on the lake town. Nice little tourist town. BTW, make sure your passports or cards are up to date which you will need to cross over. s/Toby

Let's all remember that the "passport issue" was required by the USA, not Canada. Our experience is that the Canadian border patrol is very pleasant to deal with. It is our USA border patrol that is enforcing US legislation to have passport ID upon returning to the USA.

I agree with the policy and we carry our passports when we head north... I just want our Canadian friends to remain our friends.

We did the usual "tourist" stuff, Maid of the Mist, Walk Behind the Falls. The night time light show was worth waiting for dark. All were quite fun. A real suprise was the butterfly conservatory. Very interesting. DW took photos of butterflies landing on me!

If you are planning on taking in more than several attractions, you can buy a pass offering admission to multiple venues, plus free transportation. Better to park and use public transportation.

Toby and Paul, passports are not needed until Jan 1,2008 for ground travel. All that is required for re-entry into the U.S.A. is proof of citizenship and picture ID. We carry a credit card size birth certificate certified copy, and of course our drivers license. Hopefully before the drop-dead date our state department will approve Canada's suggestion of a CC sized border crossing card, with micro-chip data(including your picture) imbedded.

I'm quite aware that the passport requirement doesn't become a requirement until next January. However, we've made 4-5 trips into Canada since 9-11 and have found that the passport works much better than the birth certificate and driver's license. We've used both methods and prefer carrying our passports.

I, too, hope the process gets easier. However, given the way our government works and the sensitivity of border security, I don't have my hopes set too high on this issue.
