Hi All,

We are thinking of crossing the bridge to Canada from Detroit for a Niagara Falls, Canada trip. We will be driving a 35 foot class A towing a Jeep Wrangler with two kids and a dog. Has anyone done this? Any trouble bringing the dog? It saves several miles of driving to go via Canada. Also anyone camp close to the falls in Canada recently? Ideas?

Here is the scoop on pets.
If you bring a pet dog or cat at least three months old from the United States, you must have a certificate to show that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies within the last three years. The certificate has to be dated and signed by a veterinarian, and it must identify the animal by breed, age, sex, coloring, and any distinguishing marks. Animal tags are not acceptable in place of certificates.
If you bring a pet dog or cat under three months old from the United States, or a guide dog from any country, you do not need a certificate, but the animal has to be in good health when it arrives. source= Entering Canada • U.S. Consular Services in Canada

Everyone entering Canada needs a Passport or Passcard to cross the border instead of just a drivers license or birth certificate as was OK in the past. How's that work for the kids? I am not sure. You need good health records for the animals as mentioned above and you absolutely need to ensure that there are no guns, mace or other restricted products on board. Getting this wrong means possible jail time!

There is a very nice KOA campground just East of downtown. As I recall it was quite expensive but this is not necessarily the time to travel on a budget. We really enjoyed the location and have stayed there on both of our visits.

Hi Joe,
You need to be the parents of the kids. Anybody else (like Gparents) need written and notarized permission to transport minor children across an international border. Passports (or the NA card) will also be required for reentry into the USA. While the notarized permission paper may not always be asked for, all one needs is to get an immigration officer with a bad attitude (and there are quite a few) and they can ruin your day. Which many of the officers relish doing.

When we visit Niagara Falls, we always stay at the KOA on Lundy's Lane. Have checked out the rest and consider this one the best.

We just got back from Niagara Falls. We stayed at the KOA mentioned above. It was really nice and fairly quiet for being on a busy roadway. They also had a "Hot Deal" where if you have a passport, you can stay for 3 nights and pay for only 2. Saved about $70 that way. It's a little expensive, but the location is great. We say a couple of other campgrounds that are near the KOA, but they didn't look that great. The KOA has a great playground for the kids, an indoor pool, and a jumping pillow that occupied our kids for hours when we weren't touring the falls.

Crossing the border was pretty easy for us. The question they focused on with us was about weapons. Guess they don't like people bringing guns across the border.

Last year we stayed at King Waldorf's Tent and Trailer Park which is near downtown. Don't be fooled by the name of the park. It is a very large and nice campground. Oh, don't take any firewood into Canada.
