No campfires! Complete bummer :(

We have been camped at Tanneyhill State Park near Tuscaloosa Al since July. Way too hot and wet for campfires right on up thru September. We are parked next to some friends where several couples usually congregate in the evenings for fellowship, and sometimes food. Back in August, we built a real fancy fire pit that's about 3X6'. We have about a cord of well seasoned wood laid in. Now there has been no measurable rain for almost two months. The entire state is under a burn ban. No rain in sight. Evening temps are quickly falling to the low 50's and below. Otherwise, ideal camping weather. Really, really bummed!

Fire bans happen all summer long in the western states. There's a reason. I'm sure you'll survive.


On a Memorial weekend in May in New Mexico we were the ones who had to call 911 because of a campground fire that quickly spread into many, many acres of forest. The weekenders left after the holiday but one careless person didn't douse the fire completely. It was windy and embers blew onto pine needles and the fire quickly exploded. I happened to be walking by at the time to see the start of it. That campground was closed completely for 6 weeks.

We were up in Idaho, rafting the Salmon River, a few years ago and we're looking for a campsite for the evening. We noticed that on one side of the river USFS had posted flyers stating that no burn restrictions had been imposed. The other side of the river had no flyers. We came upon a ranger and asked if the fire restrictions were for both sides and, amazingly, he said only river right had the restrictions. We camped on river left. I still haven't figured that one out.

I understand with the dry weather is got to be done but agree with you, camping without a fire is just not the same. Love my campfire.

Could you use a red can propane campfire? How about a small pellet fire burner?

Get everyone in the group to gather up, turn on smart phones and display the 'yule log'

Use a screen and you'll be good to go.

No open flames or fires is for good reason. Don't try to skirt the rules for a silly campfire.

We usually cook on a Big Green Egg Mini Max, but also carry a portable propane grill when open flame / fire bans are in effect.

A fire restriction can't be circumvented with a screen, there is still a fire under it.
