Cloudland Canyon State Park in NW Georgia, always a winner. Book your site early. I've camped at Doll Mountain on Carter's Lake as well, but only the walk-in tent sites.
NE Georgia mountains get pretty busy during "leaf looking" season, so consider traffic, etc.
Personal favorite campground for us is just over the state line in Alabama, Desoto State Park on the mountain above Fort Payne, AL. You'll get a little of everything, and if DW is a country music fan, you can drop in to the Alabama museum and fan club. A short drive takes you to Mentone, AL craft shops, restaurants, and the road runs the brow of the mountain where folks like the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers etc.used to keep there Summer homes. Desoto Falls is quite impressive, and you can rent kayaks for a peaceful paddle on the lake above the falls.
There's more stuff to see and do in that park than most any place I can think of, and you don't have to hike very far to do all of it, trails, mountain biking, waterfalls (big and small), climbing rock, CCC quarry, the restaurant/lodge is an original CCC structure, and there are still CCC built cabins in use. Now that I think of it, check your leaf calendar for that area, and just go to Desoto, you won't be sorry. Quaint, quiet, friendly, sort of remote.
