Northern Ca to Fl Keys, what to see?

I going to make a cross country trip in mid January; no real itinerary or time limit but expecting to be gone for about a month. I'M planning on cutting east from Bakersfield to catch I-40 near Barstow then I-10 a cross lower New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and into Florida. Final destination is down to Key Largo and the Keys. So far I plan to make stops at Tombstone AZ and The Alamo in Texas.

So my question is, what along that route is worthwhile to stop and see? I have done Google searches and read other post in the forum here. But I want suggestions from people who either live nearby or have actually visited the place they are suggesting. Again I do not have a set timeline and will be doing a mix of boon docking when I'm just going from one point to another and RV parks while sightseeing.

Thanks in advance.

John

If you haven't been to New Orleans - might want to stop there for a couple of days. No place like it. Gulf coast around Destin and Fort Walton Beach is beautiful. Both are not far off I-10.

You say that you don't have any time constrains. There is so much to see that the very best advise I can give is plan more time. 3 months would be better. We left Florida in early February this year and it took us a month to get to the border of Texas. We were in Texas one month and then headed home to East Tn. There is an overwhelming amount and variety of places and things to see on your route.

In case you don't already have it in your favorites, this is good to have available:
RV Park Reviews - Trusted Reviews of Campgrounds & RV Parks

The free Allstays Camp and RV app is pretty good also.

Sounds like a great trip.

My first thought is that you have not allowed yourself enough time to really see much more than a few highlights. We made a 70 day trip from East TN to WA and OR and it could easily have been twice as long. I only drive about 300 miles a day so I would have about 20 days of just driving to do your trip leaving not much time to enjoy many sights. Like others have said, I would spend a few days in NOLA.

Traveling West to East...

I could spend years in Big Bend National park.

Marfa lights!... http://www.visitmarfa.com/lights.php#.VmmYMUorLZ4

- Caverns of Sonora... Welcome to the Caverns of Sonora :: Caverns of Sonora

- Fredericksburg, Texas... Fredericksburg TX | Texas Hill Country

- Natural Bridge Caverns near San Antonio... Attractions in Texas | Natural Bridge Caverns

- Spoetzl Brewery, Shiner, Texas... Shiner

There is a RV show in San Antonio January 1st - 3rd... http://southtexasrvsupersale.com/

and a boat and travel trailer show at the end of January... http://www.sanantonioboatshow.com/

Good travels!

Northern Ca to Fl Keys, what to see?

Make the best of your fine time away!
You have 6400 miles round trip, 213 per day. At 450 per travel day, you have 1/2 your time just going to and fro.
I suggest bee lining it to enjoy more time in the Keys, with few major stops in between. Let the sun and surf spoil you for 2 weeks!
You work hard enough without driving hard too. Relax!
Happy Trails

Have you made reservations in the Keys or any place in southern FL yet? The Keys book early for a January stay (like last year).
