Great suggestions! I would foot stomp the Oregon coast which is incredibly beautiful and not to be missed. Stay in their state parks which are really nice with at least power and water. Crater Lake is a natural wonder and should be added as well. Stay at the Valley of the Rogue State Park and use the toad to explore.

Thanks for the tip. Valley of the Rogue State Park looks like just what we want! What is your opinion on making reservations? In September we are hoping to not be tied to specific dates but plan to check a couple days or a week ahead.

Valley of the Rogue camping is right next to I-5 if that would concern you.

If doing Crater Lake, we have stayed at Joseph H. Stewart State Rec Area with our 40' MH on Hwy 82 toward Crater Lake and just north of Medford. It's a nice drive with a RV. The sites are very large and pleasant. It's a short drive to Crater Lake. On the other side of Crater is Collier Memorial State Park which is also nice - depends where you're driving from.

You asked about reservations in Sept. Check their reservation site periodically as you're traveling to see how they're filling and if it starts getting tight then make one. Labor Day weekend, definitely, but after that we haven't had a problem... kids are back in school, football season, etc.

We traveled for 16 years with very few reservations. The major holidays we'd just stay away from any kind of water... rivers, lakes, pools. That's where the weekenders go. We've even gotten sites along the Oregon coast at state parks in all three seasons Cape Blanco State Park is gorgeous with big sites and a vacant beach. Reservations aren't even accepted there and if you get there in the morning you'll get a site.
