Just a thought. If you plan to stay in Carlsbad area, I would call ahead to see what campgrounds are available. We did this trip in August last year and one of the rangers in the caverns was complaining that all the oil work in the area had filled up all the campgrounds and dining at restaurants was troublesome. It is worth checking out.

We stayed in Anthony, NM and drove over. We missed the morning activities but took our first tour at noon and spend the rest of the day looking at all the facets of the cave. The park in Anthony was head and shoulders above anything in Las Cruces and you have great access to all the things to see in that area.

Don't stay at the RV park just outside the caverns. It's a dump. Go to RV Park Reviews for some ideas. We stayed at Brantley Lake State Park.

The name of the park is El Paso West RV Park. It is the Northern part of Anthony which puts it in the New Mexico area.

I noticed that you said you had a 7 year-old son with you. This is more of an adult park, but all the ones we looked at in that area had nothing for kids. It does have lots of trees which is something that none of the other parks we looked at in that area had.

Bob, who runs the park, is great at suggestions for local places to go (although he knows a lot more about El Paso than Las Cruces). Be sure to ask him about the back way to Las Cruces through the nut tree orchard. The drive through those trees is really something that you cannot experience anywhere else. (I know this sounds corny, but the whole orchard is loaded with very mature trees that make a dense canopy that I have never seen anywhere else. It's uniqueness is what makes it stunning.)
