We've stayed at Nehalem Bay SP frequently - no direct views of the ocean but just a short walk and the park itself is quiet and clean. Just north of Depoe Bay is Sea and Sand RV - an older, funky park with all state of the art features and if you can reserve a view site - incredible. We also REALLY enjoyed the Mill Casino RV park in Coos Bay - beautiful facility, great view of the bay, access to all of the casino amenities including pool and hot tub.

We stayed at Winchester Bay which had water on 3 sides and near the dunes. What we liked was being on the water and the restriction placed on the ATV's which number in the hundreds around the area. We had fresh crab off the nearby docks everyday. We also found Florence, which has a charming old feel town with lots of artisan shops. We liked Cannon Beach but found it a litttle too touristy. Just be prepared that the temperatures are little cooler on the coast then in land. I would echo the comment to use the campgroundreviews.com web site. Hasnt disappointed yet. Have a great trip

Grew up there and am glad to be away.
My family is still there and all of them added together
they have been to one tenth the places my Queen and I have traveled to
and enjoyed. Yes I know the term "The 10, The 405, The blah blah blah.

sorry for the "grammar police" it must be a slow day.
cannon beach rv park in cannon beach is very nice and the town is very quaint.
we have stayed in rv parks all down the coast and have enjoyed them all.
if you are planning this trip in the summer best to get your reservations in early.

Another vote for State Parks here. We did the Northern Coast last year (from Astoria to Florence) and stayed at SP's all the way. We loved all of them. Our stops were:

Fort Stevens SP - Pics HERE. Great base for exploring Astoria.
Beverly Beach SP - Pics HERE. Good stop for Newport & the lighthouse there.
Garl G. Wahsburne SP - Pics HERE. This was our FAV of the north coast. You MUST stop and see the lighthouse here.

We're doing the S.Coast in June/July and already booked Harris Beach (based on lots of recommendations), plus planning to stop at Cape Blanco. We didn't book Winchester Bay, but that's also been highly recommended.

What's your experience winging it with getting sites? Also, will a 36 ft class A have problems with certain places? We are spontaneous people and hate to be locked into a set trip if we can help it. We are planning Oregon in August.

If you want to stay in the State Parks during school vacation (June/July) then I really recommend booking. There are a few SP's that are first-come-first-serve (Carl G. Washbourne & Cape Blanco come to mind) so you can wing it in those spots, but the others really do tend to book up when the kids are out. Outside of school vacation spots open up alot. We travelled N/Coast in Aug last year and it was fairly open. Still preferred to reserve for the week-ends tho'.

As for size, we're 40-foot plus toad. No problems getting into any of the SP's in Oregon.

THANK YOU everyone! Wonderful suggestions! I'm excited about heading that way! We'll be there within the next couple of weeks...am just going to wing it with seeing where we can get a spot..might be able to book a few days ahead when we see where we are on the road in a bit.
As for the "grammar police"...I "get it"..LOL. Didn't think my use of the word "the" before the highway names (i.e. 5,99,405,etc) would cause such discussion! Ha! I don't know if its a "So Cal thing"..although as I think about it, the traffic commentators on the radio and TV do refer to the highways as "THE 405" or "The 5"...so I think its just ingrained in me. Also, when I'm talking about a specific highway that DOESN'T have a numbered name, like "The Pennsylvania Turnpike"...note the word "the" preceding the name of the highway...I would never say "drive to Pennsylvania Turnpike"...I would always put a "the" in front of it....and so on. Interesting discussion though. By the way...I'm a born and bred 3rd generation So. Californian and proud of it

I heard the numbskulls doing the Indy 500 calling a certain number THE XX car. Its a nascar thing they are trying to replicate. I hate it, open wheeled racing is certain not NASCAR as Danica Patrick has found out.

Lived in CA for almost 15 years and I agree. I always heard it called the 5, or the 101. So a CA quirk I guess?

Carol and Ed - Have a wonderful trip ! Just for fun, bring a rain coat. Don't worry about the "grammar police - they don't mean harm (maybe they're just subconsciously jealous of your sunshine, so bring it with you and share).

I cant believe no one has mentioned sunset bay state park by coos bay! Beautiful park with lots of lush manicured vegetation between most of the sites and only about 2 or 300 yds. from the beach. We stopped here for a few nights when we took the kids to the redwoods back when we had our travel trailer. look it up, you wont be dissapointed.
