We are heading to Oregon in July, we are going to start at fort Stevens and head south down 101. We would like to know what are must places to stop and see. We are planning 3 weeks. We live in N. Calif. so we know 101 once we hit calif. would appreciate any help. We are driving a 34 ft national seabreeze and toad.

3 weeks will give you ample time to explore the whole coast. We would recommend any of the state parks. You'll have nice beach accesses and natural surroundings. Take in all of the lighthouses. They're all different and have a facsinating past. Have a fun trip!

Tillamook Cheese Factory. Sample the cheese, stock up. LOL There is an Air Space Museum there, too, if you are into airplanes. Of course there is the Sea Lion Caves. If you are interested in antiques, the small towns have them handy to tourists (right along 101). Some people enjoy the dunes, in the Florence area.

We just came up 101 a little over a week ago. It is road work season, but there were no long delays. Check Gas Buddy for best prices where you plan to refuel. Expect 'around' $4 per gallon for regular, around $3.80 for diesel.

Take some time and rent some quads for the dunes. That is lots of fun too! There are some places near Chesterman State Park.

We spent a week in April this year doing what your going to do. We started at Cannon Beach and worked our way down. The state parks are great and have lots of spaces. Some have reserved sections if you call ahead. Tillamook cheese factory was great along with the airplane museum in Tillamook. The price of the cheese, however, is cheaper at Costco???!! We found the northern state parks are very treed and we had to be careful of them. They tend to only trim the overhead limbs around 10-11 feet and our MH wouldn't fit. The spaces are long enough though. The southern state parks have more open spaces and you'll fit in most of their spots. Road construction had just begun but we were in no hurry.....who would be on 101? Have fun and safe travels. (be sure and bring your bikes...lots of bike trails)

Not our Costco, plus I'm hooked on the Cheddar Cheese curds, available only at the factory

Thanks to everyone who responded, gonna try all the suggestions. Also anybody have suggestions for good golf courses on or near hwy 101?

Having been down the Oregon coast several times in the summer,you'll probably find that the state parks are all filled as of January and you'll be using mostly private campgrounds. There are a number of them and the prices aren't too bad.
I would check the state parks you want to use and see if they have spaces available.

We were down there in May. We stayed in Cannon Beach (a commercial CG), Beverley Beach SP (just north of Newport), Siuslaw River Marina CG in Florence, a KOA in Langlois and Harris Beach SP near Brookings. We weren't too impressed with the Cannon Beach CG, but they had only just opened for the season. Harris Beach looks like it was designed when "big" rigs were 30-footers and slide-outs hadn't been invented. The roads are narrow and the sites are a bit tight. Great place, though - our two Labs loved it.

As soon as you see a Tourist Information place, stop and get the current "Highway 101 mile-by-mile" book. It's a freebie and gives you lots of tips on local points of interest. Since everything in it is paid advertising, it doesn't cover campgrounds much, but you probably have the Good Sam monster book for those.

We are at the end of the same trip ending at the Redwoods at Crescent City Calif. Stayed at Beverly Beach State Park, Jesse Honeyman, and Bullards Beach and they all had vacancy's during the week. As for the Golf try Salishan in Lincoln City and Bandon Dunes in Bandon.

All the state parks are lovely! We are on our 3rd trip down the coast. Plus there are golf courses at almost every town!

This time around we stayed at (from north to south):

Fort Stevens - visit the Maritime museum in Astoria, go see Cape Disappointment on WA side, see the tower, eat fish and chips at the Bowpicker. There's a golf course just south of the park.

Nehalem Bay State Park - our new fav on the coast! Take a trip to Tillamook (cheese factory, plus an excellent Air Museum). Also do the Three Capes Drive and see Cape Meares Lighthouse. Take a daytip to Canon Beach to eat and see Haystack Rock. There's a small golf course in town.

South Beach State Park, Newport - visit the 2 lighthouses, see Old Town, visit the aquarium, tour the Rogue Brewery.

Carl G Washborne State Park, Florence - go see Haceta Head Lighthouse, have dinner on the waterfront, spend a day on the dunes!

Winchester Bay Resort - see the lighthouse, eat clams, more dune play!

Bullards Beach State Park - hang downtown, see the lighthouse, go golfing! One of the finest golf courses in the US here at Bandon Dunes. Also an excellent and very relaxed old fashioned links course just south of town. Also take a daytip to Cape Arago. Make sure to stop at the botanical gardens there.

Cape Blanco State Park - gorgeous and wild! See the Lighthouse. Spend a day in old Port Orford.

Salishan near Lincoln city is amazing - expensive but fabulous: Oceanside drives | Salishan

Consider a whale watching tour out of Depoe bay for a few hours on a inflatable boat.
