Oregon Trip planning
Would love your suggestions/thoughts. ....taking off from Phoenix in a couple of weeks In our 32'Winnebago Itasca Sunova..taking 1-10, I210, I-5 north to Portland, Oregon...then heading west to 101...then south along the Oregon coast...are we nuts not to make any reservations anywhere this time of year especially along the coast. We have 5 weeks. Thanks...

There are many nice places to stay in CA and OR. Are you looking for like KOA? Or more of a Private RV Camp ground?

I would try to make weekend and holiday reservations .weekdays aren't as much problem. The more popular state parks are probably already booked. Pvt parks not as much

Why do you want to do that to yourself? I am sure you will be able to do it. Wouldn't you rather enjoy the trip and not worry about where you are going to stay? How many stops and what is the time frame on the coast? Going all the way down to the redwoods and then back? I have done the Wa., Ore., Ca. coast many many times but wouldn't consider it without reservations this time of year.

Oregon
Cicada, I'm a bit like you and don't like to tie myself down to a schedule, but there is a risk involved. Below I've listed the cities/areas worth considering for a stop based on living here all my life. I have had good luck finding RV spots on Good Sam and visiting their web sites to appraise acceptability. By the way, Bend was not included in your route.
- The Bend area is booming with summer people and tourists because it's in the middle of a great outdoors area. You'll need a toad to see things.
- On leaving Bend you might consider going south on 97 and then 58 to Crater Lake. Diamond Lake is just north of there and is a terrific fishing lake.
- Your venture up to Portland will be the typical freeway driving. Don't know if you've been to Portland, but they tell me it's nice.
- I would hit the coast at Seaside. From there you can go north to Astoria (an old town) and on to Oceanside, WA. It's on a short peninsula that is full of history.
- Going south on 101 there are several towns worth a look. Tillamook, Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Newport, Waldport. I won't take the time to lay out the attractions because everyone has google. You can look and see what interests you.
- I liked Cresent City, CA and the redwood area. Hiway 199 from Crsent City to Grants Pass, OR is especially beautiful and can be done in a toad day trip. I don't know where you plan on heading east but I would avoid Hiway 36. 5.5 hours for 153 miles, crooked as a snake and 4 summits.
The coast hiway, 101, can be a bit crooked especially compared to Arizona, so be aware. Also, some of the trees overhang the road a bit so be aware of them.
If you have specific questions about an area please feel free to ask.

We've traveled the coast five times without reservations. There are three coast state parks that don't even accept reservations: Washburne at Florence (Heceta Head Lighthouse), Cape Blanco at Port Orford - a favorite of ours - big sites, beautiful beach and walking trails and Loeb at Brookings. We've also gotten in reservable campgrounds by getting a cancellation. We've stayed at Beverly Beach, Fort Stevens and Harris Beach by doing this. We've also stayed in a couple national forest campgrounds, casinos and county parks. We love public parks the best.
We rarely traveled with reservations in our 16 years of full-timing. We didn't want to have to be there on a certain day.
I'd suggest staying at three locations on the coast - northern, mid and lower. It makes for a lot less driving to see things.
We try to get to a park by Noon or earlier and never try to move around from Thursday thru Saturday.
As far as taking I-5 to Oregon, there are more scenic ways with minimal traffic. We like CA395 on the eastern Sierras and we've also and we've also gone up through Idaho - beautiful country. From I-84 you could take 20 or 26 and weave your way to the coast or Portland if that's where you want to begin your coastal stays.
Have a great time. It's always a favorite with us!

Since you have the time...I would take the scenic route CA north via Hwy-395. You can pickup Hwy-395 at Barstow. Lots to see along East Sierras. Head north of Reno/Tahoe to Susanville, CA, then west on Hwy-36 and drive thru Lassen Volcanic NP, then continue west on Hwy-44 to Redding and I-5 north to Shasta Lake and Mt. Shasta. Safe travels!
I will be taking the MH on a Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, Oregon Coast loop starting July 3, for 2 weeks. Maybe, we'll meet up on the trail.

I-5 in Red Bluff/Redding, CA and Oregon is OK, otherwise I avoid it!
