My husband and I just got back from a trip to the mountains of western, NC. Since we are motorcyclists, this is a rider's paradise. We have been riding for 5 years and we always try to seek out new and fun rides.

We have a Mountain Aire motorhome, and pull our Harley-Davidson on a trailer behind it. The campground we chose to stay at is called Ironhorse Motorcycle Campground in Stecoah, NC (near Robbinsville). It's a motorcycle camground with tent & RV sites as well as cottages. One of the best campgrounds I have ever been to. A stream runs through it and it is painstakingly perfected as a rider's paradise. They serve meals and have a nice entertainment area.

Our daily rides (9 hour rides) included some of the best countryside we have ever seen. From lush, mountain views, to rivers and lakes. It was breathtaking all the way. The fresh mountain air was incredible. Our rides found us at Fontana Dam and resevoir, to highway 28 along the river and on to highway 129, the famous "tail of the dragon" with it's 311 curves in 18 miles. Then it was on to Cherohala Skyway and all it's unspoiled mountainous beauty. We rode through beautiful forests, quaint little towns, along wild water rapids, streams, creeks, out of the way little eating places for the trip of a lifetime.

I feel like the luckiest person on this earth. Riding America with the best husband in the world, doing two things we love...motorcycling and RVing. Oh but it gets NO better than this!!

See where all we've been. You should really see this area!!

H Rhonda,

WNC is a pretty area. If you're wanting an excuse to come back, there's an Appalachian Campers Rally being planned for August 23 - 26 in Whittier, NC.

We spent a week in WNC in late May and enjoyed it very much. It is a beautiful area of the country.

I took a look at your blog. Lots of great pictures there. I also enjoyed reading your blog. You write well and I will check it again later for updates.

The Cherohalla Skyway is a great place to go to see snow in the wintertime. SWNC gets very little snow accumulation. But with the higher altitude, that road "catches" most of the snow fall.

Former resident of Franklin, NC.

Gosh, I wish we could go! Unfortunately, it would be hard for us to go back that soon (it's about a 10 hour drive with our MH).

To be honest, I'd be scared to death to ride that road if any snow was anywhere around. That road also has a lot of fog on it if you go early in the a.m. We waited til it lifted before we got on it. One thing about the mountains, I hate riding in the fog and avoid it if all possible. But the ride during clear weather is fantastic!! I really do love the area very much.
