Outer banks evacuation details?

On Saturday I set out from Big Pine Key headed North. I planned to catch some surf and the Outer Banks is the place to do it. It has been evacuated though. Can anyone tell me how stringent the evacuation is? I live in the keys and there are seldom any roadblocks to keep us out when they evacuate. I am wondering if it would be worth a try to just drive in and dry camp where I intended to go. I am sure those folks could use the money and I don't need the power. Is there anyone who lives there or knows the situation?

I saw a news report today that said they were only letting in people who live there, and the work crews. I guess having no electricity for the island puts a kink in a lot of things.

They will not let anyone in except permanent residents. If you are there and don't leave as ordered there is a big fine! Best look for somewhere else to go, they're expecting two or more weeks for repairs.

I believe that NC12 is closed at Oregon Inlet - meaning that you can't get to Hatteras or Ocracoke, but Nags Head/Kitty Hawk and the rest of Bodie Island is still open for business.

This is good information and not a local economy killer.

This is bad information and does nothing to help the local economy in areas that are still open.

I will agree that nc is ran by very strict rule makers and enforcers.

Is it closed by decree or is it closed by police cars? If decree only I might give it a try. I doubt there would be a fine. Never is in the Keys. Might be moot anyway since they are getting power going in 3-5 days now. Wonder how early they will let me get in line for the Cedar Island ferry? I will make a few calls and see what's up.

Unhappy

Closed by police. Cedar Is ferry closed also to non residents. Hatteras and Okracoke Islands are closed to visitors until power is restored....estimated tonight to be 4-6 days.

There are plenty of Facebook pages run by CGs in the OBX as well as the Dare County website to get the most up to date information. Make no decisions based on what you read here.

Maybe the tourist season will be saved after all.
