Hi, has anyone camped in the Outer Banks NC area? My wife and I are thinking of heading to the KOA in Hatteras in May. We would appreciate any tips or info for those that have been. Thanks

Dave

I think you would be better off money-wise as well as camp wise to stay at the camp ground next to the KOA. Its called Camp Hatteras. They have a beach side (with a walkway to the ocean as well as a bay side CG) I prefer the bay side. There's another smaller CG before you get to these two that is cheaper, but was full when we were there. Do not rember the name.

We also stayed at the Federal CG across the street from the marina right before you go over the cut. Small sites, no W/E/S and pleaty of mosquitoes, I mean lots of um as well as sand spurs. Forget this place. s/Toby

Hattaras KOA is nice and we often stay there since they have each pull thru's and nice set of sites that back up to the sand dunes. Camp Hatteras is also nice in that is has paved sites and sites on the sound side and more grass. Either way I think you are fine at either. There is a smaller campground just a block down from these two called Ocean Waves but you need to make Reservation in January to get in as it is small and because the price is so low if fills up immediately. If you go in May three of the four National Park campgrounds will be open. Very cheap but no hook-ups but we also use these parks you just have to learn to handle the mosquitoes and short sites but in May it will not be busy and you should not have a problem. Anyway you decide to go, in May you will not have any issues. We start going in March up thru June, then start going back Sept. thru end of Oct. We go often. Let me know if you have questions.

We were in the Hattaras area last month. Rather than stay at a near beach location we opted for North River CG, Shawboro, NC. Lovely CG at much less than the sardine can CGs on the Cape.

The beach was of no interest to us, late Oct & see our home in sig, so the drive to the well worthwhile Wright Memorial was no problem.
