Over night spot along a trip from SC to Key West

The better half and I we be heading to Key West to stay a week in June. We originally planned to head down on the Saturday of our reservation, but are thinking we might want to start out on Friday and stay a night somewhere along the way to keep from having to drive over 12 hours straight. We will be heading down I-95, just wondering if anybody has recommendations. TIA!

Jetty Park at Port Canaveral would be a pretty good way point. If you do truck stops, there is a Flying J at Fort Pierce.

Just be sure to get on the Turnpike @ Ft. Pierce and take it around Miami! Those drivers are worse than Atlanta!

Pick an area about half way then go to RV Park Reviews - Trusted Reviews of Campgrounds & RV Parks

I usually stop in the general vicinity of Jupiter or West Palm Beach FL. From there, it is just over 5 hrs to Key West. I have stayed at the KOA adjacent to Lion Country Safari, and this year we're staying at Jonathan Dickinson State Park.

We stay at both the KOA and JDSP when visiting our daughter, while snowbirding. We like both. If you stay at the KOA you can get a free pass to Lion Country Safari. They have limited 50 amp sites, which you may need for multiple AC's in June. JDSP has large sites , full hook ups with 50 amp service. It's in the nice area of Hobe Sound. JDSP closed the river area sites for renovation, so all the tent and popup campers have to use the "RV" sites. I don't know how busy FL campgrounds are in June, but both could have the above issues if they are busy.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park is a great stop - you will Need a reservation for Friday Night

Fort Pierce is not a good option, it is on the list as # 1 of the dangerous places in Fla to relocate to.

We just stayed at the Port St. Lucie RV resort which is about 3 miles off the FL Turnpike. In March, we stayed at the Ft. Lauderdale KOA - a little tight but closer than Port St. Lucie.

Amazingly, Key Largo and Marathon have cheaper gas prices than the Turnpike or FL City. However, if you are towing or diesel, it may be a good idea to fill up at the Snapper Creek service area on the Turnpike.

Port St Lucie is a good option. An old Outdoor Resorts of American at Melbourne Beach is good also. As to Ft Pierce being dangerous, I submit that finding dangerous spots in any metro area is pretty easy. In the case of the Ft Pierce Flying J, it's a well lighted lot & the RV spaces are up front and big enough. If you over night at truck stops often, you will feel perfectly at ease here. There is also a Casino at the intersection of Us 41 and Fl 997. Great overnight in a heavily patrolled lot.

For a freebie, take Hwy 997 south to avoid Miami. It is only two lane but runs pretty good with several fuel stations. For another freebie, maybe you could overnight in the parking lot of the casino just north of the intersection of US 41 and Hwy 997.
