Overnight/boondock near Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)

Other than the Walmart off of 40 (west of Knoxville, Tennessee (TN)) does any body know where a 37ft RV with a toad can pull in to boondock for two nights to visit ORNL?

The Walmart is ok but it is still a 40 mile round trip.

We will be passing through August 20,2016 or so.

Thanks for considering my question.

I have a place about 30 minutes from Oakridge, so I've never taken my RV there. However, I've visited the area many times, and when I saw your post, my first reaction was: "his is a difficult request." The area around Oakridge is is either populated, or hilly, heavily-forested land that leaves little room for open, public areas that one might successfully park overnight. Tennessee folks are awfully friendly and accommodating, however, so you might have luck contacting the local Chamber of Commerce to see if they could lead you to a local business owner who would allow you to park in their lot.

On the other hand, one of the area's campgrounds has dry camping spaces that go for $20 a night, plus tax. At that rate, it may just be easier (and more relaxing) to stay at an established campground minutes away from Oakridge. Be sure to visit the American Museum of Science and Energy while you're in the area, as well. It has some pretty good displays. --Alan

While it is not boondocking, try the TVA campground at Melton Hill Dam. Not far from ORNL.

I should not have restricted it to boondocking. Any accommodation with the ability to stay two consecutive nights would be appreciated.

I don't see a way to edit the post so this reply is the best I can figure out to do

The Dam is close I'll consider it. More importantly though I had not been checking the TVA for campsites while in the area and will now especially if they give discounts to people with inter-agency passes

American Museum of Science & Energy seems to be the only way to go to ORNL.

It looks like the general public can only tour ORNL via the
American Museum of Science & Energy

So I have my boondocking location which is the Walmart in Oak Ridge across the street from the museum.

Now all I have to do is find a way into the Walmart that doesn't have trees.
Streeview is amazing.

Thanks for the help.
