Boondcking into the Keys

Stayed at the Cracker Barrel in Florida City just at the top of Rt. 1 and in the Home Depot in the same place. Walmart was a no no if I remember correctly. Lots of folks in the Cracker Barrel.

I have seen RVs in the Kmart parking lot in Marathon. However technically overnight parking in Monroe county is a no no.

There is also a large parking area gulf side about MM54 next to a public boat launch where the Quay restaurant used to be where we have been seen RVs and trucks. Same rule should apply but come in late and leave early and things might be OK unless you get a Sheriff with not much to do.

If you get to Bahia Honda before the check in time they will let you enter and wait. We found near the marina and boat launch was about the largest lot to fit a big rig. I had to "vulture" a site one time and wait while other campers packed up and left. They were legit, we were early.

Great place! That's our overnight stop every trip, never did make a reservation. I once missed the exit, had a lot of fun getting back on track.

We recently stayed at Miccosukee going and coming from the keys and enjoyed both stays. Park in the back lot and security comes right over to give info about sign in and casino info. You must display a permit paper in the window to park. Upstairs cafeteria was good and if you sign in as a player you get a $30 loaded card on your first visit. Many other rvs in the lot and no problem running the genny in the morning. I won $104 on the first slot play with house money. Only down side is we don't smoke and like most casinos it has a heavy cigarette smell.

Outbackmac,
See post number 6 above in this thread. You won't find anything closer or better between Miami and the keys. Key Largo is a 45 minute drive from here.

I see coaches parked in the key largo K mart lot all
the time. The problem this time of year is, the lots
always full of cars. No room!

rv parks

After doing alot of research we have narrowed our stay at either Miami everglades, or Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial county park, as our last stay before our final drive into Bluewater rv park. Please give me your pros and cons to each park. and where you would stay. we will only be there 2 nights.

Also After reading the rules for bluewater rv they mention bugs and ants are bad. what does everyone use for ants or other critters from getting in there coach. for skittters bug spray with Deet?

I can't comment on the mainland parks but the last time I camped in the Keys (April at Bahia Honda) the tiny skeeters ( we call them No-see-ums in South Carolina) were bad starting just about sunset. We used Deet based spray with some success - remember to keep camper door closed. We also put out a lot of citronella candles. A high speed outdoor fan helped a lot also. We did not have an ant problem but at other campgrounds I have used generic spray from Walmart, Lowes, etc. around tires, jacks, etc to keep them out of the camper. We had no other critter problem other than a stray lizard or two.
