You're going into the Mountains. Don't push too hard going up the pass. Gear way down and put the exhaust brake or retarder on high and go SLOW going down hill. Only use your brakes to keep the speed down when it creeps up too high. If you ride your brakes you will burn them out. If on the way up you have a long line of cars (>4) look for a place to pull over and let them by. On the way down just start slow and go slower. You and all the cars behind you will get to the bottom just fine. If you find a place to pull over and let them by do so, but do not speed up just because they are stacked up. Save Travels and enjoy the mountains.

We visited Pagosa last fall. Loved it she wants to go back this fall. Coming from the east we used I70 to 160. La Veta pass was super easy & Wolf Creek was no issue at all. Pagosa is practically just the other side of Wolf creek pass.

Same question we asked last year! We were coming down I25, and took the Wolf Creek pass route. As said, all was OK. Though I did scare the wife when I played the famous song before we headed out in the AM! Watch weather, as storms can still surprise you this time of year.

If you want to spend some coin! Wolf Creek RV was one of the nicest places we stayed in last years travels. Good hosts and hostesses...

Travel safe, have fun
