Phoenix to Northern CA suggestions

We just got our first MH and want to plan some longer trips then the weekend getaways we did in our old ultralight TT. I was thinking of going to Northern CA (San Francisco, Napa, maybe some redwoods). I'm looking for some suggestions for places to go and parks to stay (3 dogs and prefer full hookups). We would want to make a stop halfway between PHX and NoCal ... maybe near or just past LA. And what's the best time of year to make this trip?

Thanks 😃

If you plan on going thru LA and north to Frisco I would plan on Bakersfield RV Resort as a mid point. There are very few RV parks in LA area and fewer still on I-5, so go north on hwy 99 To Bakersfield. From there you can jump over to I-5 north or west on hwy 46 to Paso Robles. Anywhere you go along the Calif beaches you will need advance reservations in the summer. Also be advised that there are few RV parks on hwy 99 between Bakersfield and Sacramento.

You asked what time of year...Sept - Nov is mild weather along the coast and you will have no trouble finding RV parks with openings, even in resort areas.

Instead of I-5 or 99 and the boring drive with mega traffic, plan your route along CA395. It's absolutely gorgeous with many campgrounds or RV parks. Then take Hwy 50 down to Sacramento and San Fransicso area, then Hwy 101 north.

Thanks for the information. I definitely want to go when the weather is mild. So, fall might be perfect especially since it is still over 100 degrees here until late September. We are going to the Grand Canyon during that time this year. That leaves me plenty of time to plan a nice long trip next fall. Keep the suggestions coming.

San Simeon state park near Hurst Castle, Monterrey, Yosemite, Sequoia. We did this trip in December and had a great time, no crowds.

San Luis Port/Morro Bay central coast for Norcal Half Moon bay and Pacifica beach some are first come and are good camp sites and Richardson grove up in the redwoods area. You can also get allstay app and it will show you a lot of campgrounds. If you make Bakersfield a pit stop check out Bakersfield Rv park

We stayed at A Country RV Park in Bakersfield. It was nice.

Yanks Rv resort in Greenfield CA
near Monterey is a very nice place. If your on the I5 near Redding the Durango RV resort is fantastic.

If in or near Monterrey, be sure to check out the aquarium there. Plan on spending the entire day there.

If you are in a hurry, take I-5. It is as boring as watching paint dry, though, and, the last time I was on it (it's been about 15 years), it was pretty bumpy. Considering how broke CA is, I doubt that has changed.

The 101 is a much more pleasant drive. One unusual stop along the way is Madonna Inn. There is a nice restaurant there and the public areas of the Inn are interesting. Be sure to check out the downstairs Men's Room (yes, women get away with checking it out; my friend and I did when we were there). Highway 1 follows the coast and is simply breathtaking but it would be slower and the many sharp turns would be "challenging" for a long rig.

If you have not been, Yosemite, Yosemite, Yosemite and if you have, go again. Spend a couple days. The Redwoods also a great place to go. Anytime after labor day and before November is a great time to go. Kids are back in school and the weather can still be pretty nice.

Where did you stay in Yosemite? It's definitely on my wish list.
