Unless you're in the area early, chances are you'll have some trouble finding a cg close in. We stayed just up the road (24) in Woodland Park at Diamond CG. Very nice park nestled in the pines and out of the hustle and bustle. We stayed there for about 4 days exploring the area with the Jeep...Garden of the Gods is a must see as well.

The race must be something else up close and personal...that road would be crazy at those speeds...even though most of it is now paved. When we were there, they had almost paved the whole thing...hadn't gotten to the top though. We heard what there was such an uproar that they stopped the paving toward the top. Bob

Thanks Bob.

I should rewrite my question. We are camping ON Pikes Peak. I bought the camping pass last week.

Thanks.

You will have to wait a while, the race is July 8. I will post pictures when I return.

You'll enjoy it! I was a race official (communications) a few years ago, and my position was on a turn about half way up, pre-paving. It was a thrill to have the cars thunder past me just a few feet away.

Be prepared - the race I was working (June 2004) had SNOW that day, that closed the road at higher elevations. The folks there to watch the race had to wait until they plowed the road so they could come off the mountain. They had to shorten the race to about the half way point. Quite a thrill to see up close....
