The very best place for the South Rim is Trailer Village, IN the park near the rim edge. The free shuttle stops continuously outside the campground entrance and you can ride all day long, getting on and off wherever and whenever. It's full hookups.

Don't waste your time staying in Williams. It's a long boring drive to the Canyon and then you have to wait in line to enter and try to find a limited parking space. Stay at Trailer Village and yes, it will be hot.

Much cooler is the North Rim but depending on the size of your RV you might not fit in the park's campground although they have a few spaces for a 40' RV - no hookups but on the North Rim you don't need air conditioning. A full hookup park near the North Rim would be in Jacob Lake or Kanab, UT (hot in Kanab). Both are a long drive to the national park entrance. A couple other suggestions for the North Rim, dry camping, is DeMotte national forest campground or just south and beyond that campground is a good gravel road heading west. You only have to drive about 1/4 to 1/2 miles in to find nice boondocking spaces. We've done the South Rim a few times and now our favorite is the North Rim and boondocking. It's quiet and laid-back.

However, for a first-time visitor to Grand Canyon you'd probably enjoy the South Rim more but remember - it's going to be hot and crowded in July. There's a lot more 'touristy' things at the South Rim - gift shops, restaurants and the free shuttle to get you almost everywhere without having to drive your vehicle.

The North Rim is nice but you really need to visit the South Rim first. Stay at Trailer Village. Then, after you have had enough go northeast through Page, AZ and then west to Glendale, UT, stay at Bauer's Canyon RV park and then you can go to the North Rim, Zion National, and Bryce. Now, that's a trip worth doing. We did. Enjoy.

Hwy 89 is closed south of Page so you'd have to take a detour.

Also, staying in Glendale, UT would involve a LOT of driving to see the 3 parks. Would highly recommended moving and staying near each park for leisurely touring.

They paved a road through the Indian reservation that runs parallel to 89, is is called 89T and it brings you out right in page,AZ also.
