Planning Trip to Michigan and Canada
We are starting to plan our trip from Colorado to Michigan this fall. Our plans are to take I70 across the country. We will be staying in Port Huron for a couple of nights and have a day trip over to Niagara Falls. I have family in Midland and Bay City area and will stay in the general area. This is the first trip we are thinking of taking our dogs. Little nervous about that but I don't want to kennel them. Any advice taking them?

After visiting your family head to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore near Traverse City, Michigan. It's beautiful in the Fall. Then continue north to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and take Hwy 2 west weaving your way back home. Stay off the interstates and you'll see more of this beautiful country!
Here's some information if planning to cross the border into Canada with your dogs:

I live in that area. Sleeping Bear/Nordhouse Dunes are worth a visit as is Pictured Rocks and Tahquamenon falls in the Upper Peninsula. If you hike or fish check out Manistee river trail.

We camped at Tahquamenon Falls at the state park. No cell reception and little tv but really worth the visit. There is a small library in town that has free wi-fi even when they closed. I would go out in the morning and download emails with my morning joe at the picnic table out front. Very quiet and serene there. The falls are beautiful also.
Pictured Rocks boat cruise is a must or if you kayak, take yours or rent one to get up close and personal. We stayed at Munising Tourist park there right on Lake Superior for outstanding sunsets. Plus there is about a dozen smaller waterfalls in the Munising area that are all worth the visit.
Niagara Falls is worth 2 days if you have the time. The falls at night lit up is great but the better view is from the Canadian side. We camped there in 14 at the NY state park on Lake Ontario, again the sunsets are to die for. We went back in Jan. of 17 and stayed at the Sheraton on the 25th floor. The snow gives the falls a whole new look and looks like an ice kingdom with the spray freezing all the falls. Having a drink with the fireplace going watching the falls at night is a great way to relax.

We will be in that area in July and haven't settled on a full plan yet although we have reserved a week near Niagara Falls in late July.
Two years ago we went along the Lake Michigan shore to Mackinaw Island and then up into Canada through Sault Ste Marie. We went north up the Superior Shore to WaWa and then went across the Trans-Canada Highway to Vermont. The Canadian State Parks along the lakes are beautiful. We did not make advanced reservations anywhere and had no trouble getting overnight spots. As long as you have rabies certificates for the dogs, and passports for yourselves, you should have no problems with the border crossings going or returning.
This year we are debating whether to go up through Wisconsin to upper Michigan and then come south through the glove, or whether to go around Huron and then down through Toronto. It may come down to how much more expensive fuel is in Canada and what others have to say about camping along the Lake Huron Shore.

We did the UP last year (Mackinaw City area) - We were VERY happy with Lakeshore RV Park Campground.
We especially liked getting a site along the "front row", as it gave an incredible view of Lake Michigan out our front window !!
Check it out !!

Hi, I am not sure a day trip to Niagara Falls will be enough, it is a tourist mecca and there is so much there to do other than just the falls.
Taking dogs into Canada is not a problem Importing or Travelling with Domestic Dogs - Canadian Food Inspection Agency
Make sure all rabies and vaccines are up to date and bring your certificates with you. Pet food should be in original packaging. That was it. When we crossed the border and handed over our passports we included the dogs papers. Easy-peasy.
All the other suggestions about what to see and do in Michigan apply. If you love gardens try Dow Gardens in Midland or Meijer Garden in Grand Rapids. Both are beautiful.
Enjoy my home state.

Here are some great write-ups on the Niagara area - both the U.S. and Canada. Check out their RV park review, also. They have a dog, too.

Last August we drove to Niagara Falls, stayed at the Grand Island KOA.. Had an awesome time, spent 5 nights in the area... We left and drove to Petoskey Michigan.. Stayed at the Petoskey KOA it was great.. Loved the Petoskey area, only 45 minutes from the ferry to Mackinaw Island... We spent 5 days there as well... We saw all 5 Great Lakes on our trip... We go back to northern Michigan again...
